DJ is a tad loud. But the beer is cold and the scenery is good. I’ll take it.

Not a vacation, a trip. But with enough beer and if the kids go to sleep early, it can be almost a vacation :D

It’s an interesting phenomenon. People pay thousands of dollars to go be around thousands of other people so they can be hot and tired and miserable and pay exorbitant prices for food and alcohol all allegedly in the name of having fun. That’s why I’m drinking—so I won’t think about or remember how expensive the beers are. When we check out, I won’t even look at the bill.

But, yeah. Part of parenting is taking vacations for the kids and not the parents. I’m okay with that.

Same here...it kind of changes your expectations. You know, to where you can shell out a ton of cash just to share some experiences with them, even if it’s stuff you’ve done before.

A little fun reading for you and the wifey when you have 10 minutes or so:

We’re taking another trip in July. That will be a three week, 3000 mile drive up to Chicago and places in between. Beers and pools are fine, but that is my idea of a vacation (#traveling). And I don’t care if my kids don’t like it. They’ll appreciate it later.

Damned straight. Memphis and St. Louis are worth at least a half day each. My knowledge west of the MS River is spotty. Northwest AK is supposed to be pretty cool (Ozarks), lots of places to spend a couple days. Branson (despite the cheese) is also reputable for all the family-friendly tourist kitsch, go-karts, etc.

No Memphis on this trip. Been there too many times on trips to the East Coast. But definitely spending a day in StL. Going to Ft. Wayne to visit brother in law, and I have decreed that I am spending a full day at the USAF Museum. I may go by myself, driving down from FW. Then on to CHI for a couple of days, then home. I’d like to swing west and add a couple of states to my list, but we’ll see.

Yeah, the hard part is everything west of CHI is (for the most part) some pretty boring driving, especially on a really long trip. But I ’ d definitely think about NW AR and/or Branson — mountain lakes and lodges, great place for kids, and pretty close to halfway home for you. I only know a few people who have done it, but the area keeps showing in Southern Living and piqued my interest. I know some climbers who frequent the area.

Dayton would be awesome, don ’ t miss it. On my bucket list as soon as I can convince the family we need to go to Ohio for something...

big difference is that the water is more of a yellowish color.

with that much kids in it you know more than half of them just pee’d in it.

Went to Dayton 20+ years ago, long before the big expansion. Just seeing the XB-70 will be worth it. Hoping to hit NW AR. Been across the southern part enough times.

Not sure myself. I do hear all to often people coming back from one and saying, ‘I need a holiday after spending one with family’.

So it doesn’t sound good what ever it is.

Grew up in Iowa — can confirm! Although the Amana Colonies are kind of cool if you’ve never been around any Amish, and if you are a president junkie you can hit the Hoover Presidential Library and check out the UofI.

Yep, I like the Midwest just fine, I’m just speaking to the geographical expanses for a roadtrip. My parents used to live in SE KS and I remember it well. I also drove nonstop from Alabama to Colorado once and KS/MO about killed me. The Plains are the best way to get a sense for how big this country really is.
