Kinja'd!!!

Yes, the search is over after my little sister’s mega awesome W210 was unfortunately totaled . Here is what I found. Drum roll sfx please..........................

First, the E90 from the last post was a complete dud. Most of OPPO suggested it to be NP and it was. But.... E90's are going to E90. There were signs of classic bimmer under the perfect cosmetic bits when I went to go see this car despite it having low miles, SUPER clean (freshly SVENDED) and a near perfect maintenance record from the dealer, it gave me too many signs of impending doom. The lesson, NP’s can turn into CP overnight my fellow oppos.

In the long run from what I knew before hand and what my fellow tech homies TFritsch and AMGtech discussed, it was better to let this be someone else’s burden.

Now..... the car!!!!!

2005 Mercedes-Benz C230 Kompressor SPORT, 78k miles

BOOOM! Flippin perfect interior and suuuper clean exterior. My little sister loves to SVEND her car and will enjoy to do so with this beauty. BOOOOM!

And boom indeed because after driving it to work the next day, it went full German :’(

Side note, The car seemed fine when I looked at it. I didn’t drive it too much or at high speed but it felt and looked fine. The car was originally $7999 but had recently dropped to $6995. After some gangsta-ass haggling , I got it down to $5900 cash (per insurance check). My sister drove it home to my parents house soon after.

I dropped off EL Zapatito at parents house yesterday to take the car (no name yet) to work . On the way in, there was a sudden 20% drop of power and the CEL came on.“Aaaaaaand here we go”, I thought.

Once in the shop, this is what we found:

1 code for thermostat threshold

1 code for bank 1 too rich

classic vent hose under supercharger area cracked

classic belt tensioner in bad shape (superchager must come off to replace)

ECM inside box drowning in oil

front harness covered in oil

o2 sensor completely saturated in oil

rear main leaking, as is tradition

At that moment (and AMGtech knows what’s up) I remembered that there was a recall for this very issue. Checked the VIN and it was covered and pending. This would take care of everything besides the tensioner and t-stat. Yes indeed, a couple grand worth of stuff covered. Those 2 parts that were not covered were about $160 at my employee price. We wrote the vent hose under another warranty line. It was also eligible for an airbag recall as well. VICTORY for ULY!!!!

I guess the previous owner didn’t get the recall letter.

I feel like this little used car lot felt relieved that someone purchased this troubled car. You know they cleared the codes just before I got there. Jokes on them that this was all actually covered lolz :]

I’ve always liked this body style.. Especially when it has the blue glass.

C is for Coffin, that’s good enough for me!

Yeah, it’s a little tight inside (coming from a W210), but fun little cars nonetheless. My old boss had an SLK with that engine and it did a pretty good job. I miss the simple and logical interiors of that era.

Be sure to rip on her for buying the Old Man Tan color :D

I know they weren’t terribly popular, but I ways wanted a C-class Coupe of that generation. It’s like a BMW Compact with a supercharger.

The car looks good, glad most of the work is under recall.

I’d still go back to the dicks at the dealership and say, ‘cheers for the car, it drives a treat’. Then walk away laughing.

Nice to hear more people enjoy looking after their cars and keeping them clean.

lolz I should do that :]

I wish I could go back to that type of upkeep on my cars like my little sister. She learned great from me back when I was good at it. She even has her very own “box of many things”. I just can never find time. Even if I had an extra 6 hours in the day, i won’t be able to get things done

I don’t think I’ve seen more than half a dozen ever. Certainly less of them than Chrysler Crossfires (of which a local used car lot currently has 8-9 for whatever reason).

It’s interesting how much local distribution differs from national or global numbers. For example, I think Mazda makes up about 1-2% of US annual auto sales, but I’m fairly certain about 10% of cars in my little Ohio town are Mazdas.

When they first came out I think I was still in elementary school, so the most I knew about the thing was that it was a Mercedes. I remember being impressed by the shape and being curious what KOMPRESSOR meant.

Interesting. I’ll add C230s to my mental list of cars that are disproportionately popular in the PNW, right below Subarus and everything made in Japan in the ‘80s (the latter largely because they all rusted to death by 1995 where you live).

When the SLK was new, some of the models had KOMPRESSOR on the booty. I remember having a friend be like, “man, I really want to get one of those KOMPRESSOR ’s someday.”

I should visit a junk yard, pull a blower, show up at his house and give him a KOMPRESSOR . :)

$5900 for a non-AMG W210 is pretty remarkable, too.

Could this new 203 have some front bumper clips missing? That’s a hell of a panel gap on the driver’s side. Common parking lot issue, might also explain the missing mesh piece.

I envy you, though. You either know how to wrench or are surrounded by those who do. You have a support system that can be better in many ways than a warranty.

lol that on it’s own is crazy. It was a 2002 in incredible condition, navigation, all that. But still, I was expecting maybe 3, 4 tops.

Indeed that panel was hella loose but fixed now. It was also missing the entire belly shield but we had 3 extra ones from customer cars lol :]

wrenching from shops to dealers since I was 15 :] Not entirely too much now since i’ve moved to the parts department but if one wants to own a car made after 08, warranties are almost a must. Personally, I’ll stick to cars under 2005. Simple time :]

Mate, it only takes one big clean every six months.

Between, just keep on top with maintenance washes.

Gyeon Bathe+

Shampoo and seal your car in one hit.

Stopping at 4:20 you can dry your car with the drying aid/sealant, Gyeon Cure.

Gyeon Cure. You don’t need to prep before using it after using Bathe+.

Then once a month or so wash your car and rinse (sheet off as much water beads as possible and then finish off by using Cure as a drying aid.

I’ve got it down to 25 before now.

The water behaviour is mental afterwards.

These days even the most loaded as-new non-AMG 210 probably won’t pass 6K retail. They are in that awkward stage - too old to be new, too new to be old. Probably an unfairly lamented car, as so many are still on the road, and many owners by now are neglectful.

I think early 203s had a ton of issues, but by 05 a lot of it was worked out. Good luck with it, she’s lucky to have you.

Oh, the rust.

I alternate between an 06 Mazda3 and an 01 Miata for my daily commute. It seems Mazda got the rustproofing memo 25 years late.

We got in a 1997 or 1998 W210 Lozenzo package e320 last week in in trade. It is in killer shape but out used car dept. only gave the owner $1800 for it.

Update on the C230, we are going to put the alternator on warranty also lol :] It was a bit oily and will be covered by the recall lol. Thanks Mercedes-Benz lol.

A friend of mine has an 03 C230, looks perfect but needs over $5k in work, $2.5k of which is a/c work alone. I also do know where she took it to, and it’s a reputable shop. Needs all new a/c system, evap system, tires, and various suspension components.

I can see that. It’s the “thing” about owning these type of cars that people know but don’t want to think of because of how nice they are cosmetically. Even if low miles and spotless.

The shop is the dealership I work at :] Shop foreman aka my best buddy and yours truly are the ones working on it. Update, the alternator was also a bit saturated so we are adding a new one also per the recall. The trans mount was also worn but I had one here in good shape so I put that on this morning real quick.
