I have a confession: even though I’m a health nut, I enjoy a nice sugar-free energy drink. Venom Energy is an energy drink made by Dr. Pepper Snapple Group. PDQ gas stations sell them for $1.49. But Woodman’s supermarket now has them for $0.89, including the (apparently?) elusive Watermelon Lime flavor.

Usually at PDQ they have the Citrus and Strawberry Apple low calorie Venom Energy drinks. The Citrus tastes like Mountain Dew and the Strawberry Apple tastes like strawberry popsicles. I resisted the temptation to buy a bunch of them the past several times I bought groceries at Woodman’s, but last night I caved and bought one of each of the 3 low calorie flavors, including this Watermelon Lime which I hadn’t seen at PDQ before.

Turns out, Watermelon Lime is some magical special flavor that’s not even listed on the Venom Energy website . WHOA.

All I can say about Low Calorie Watermelon Lime Venom Energy is that it tastes like you’re drinking a fizzy watermelon Jolly Ranger. But in case you want someone else’s much more detailed account, I found this video. He waits until 4:08 to taste the drink, and his reaction is, “It’s unique. I can’t say it’s horrible, but I can honestly say that I will never buy it again.”

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Also on the topic of drinks, my favorite gif from the Comey hearing yesterday is him taking this sip of water.

I have always contended that Mountain Dew Voltage is like a Jolly Rancher - though weirdly enough, maybe like a Jolly Rancher variety that doesn’t exist.

All those artificial sweeteners just taste super bitter to me. Like chewing up Tylenol.

Mountain Dew Voltage is apparently a raspberry citrus flavor. Maybe it tastes like blue raspberry Jolly Ranchers?

Pretty close, actually. Though a hint of something more.

The new Mountain Dew ‘DEW S A’ which is code red, voltage and the blue one does in fact taste like a damn bomb pop and I’m currently hooked on it.

For me it depends on the sweetener. Some are better than others. I put stevia in my coffee and it’s pretty decent. This Venom has erythritol and it’s also relatively non-bitter.

That sounds truly awful. Then again, last I checked, I was a big fan of Mountain Dew Code Red. I was drinking Cucumber Lime Rock Star, but I think that flavor is going away. Pretty much, if I like something, that’s the kiss of death for that item.

Sounds bloody awful, though I used to enjoy Code Red once upon a time.

I quite like the sugar free monster but it is most definitely not for everyone

My favorite no-sugar Monster flavor is Ultra Red.

It’s not a regular soft drink for me, but one I get from time to time. Certainly has the syrupy quality of a Jolly Rancher down pat. More often lately I’ve been drinking various other Dew family drinks.

I love the Ultra Red.

I think I’d have to say it’s the only one I really like. The others have flavours I really can’t make out or are too sweet or taste chemically.

Yup. I’d rather have the calories of real sugar, or high-fructose corn syrup if you want to get technical, than chewing up tylenol.

I used to drink a full sugar Code Red now and again for the boost. Nowadays I use Kirkland brand energy shots and mix them with water. Sometimes I’ll poor one into a fountain drink diet cola or Dr. Pepper.

The Kickstart varieties make for a good stable pick-me-up because they’re only half-cal. Half sweetened with sucralose, half real sugar. They come in both ordinary carbonated (more soda-like) varieties and “hydrating” varieties with coconut water.

The cucumber lime Rock Star had just a touch of sugar as well.
