With my bank account recovering from paying off LASIK, I’m again turning my attention towards a second car. Especially with summer coming around, I’m looking for something fun to just blast around in and maybe commute a day or two in. Been looking at MR2s for awhile, and this one has been on CL for a couple months. I looked past it a couple times, but I’m coming back to it. Seems like a clean, sorted model, just a little on the high end of the price range? 1989 MR2 .

At the same time, I came across this 91 Stealth RT. At $4k it seems intriguing, though I’d imagine it’d be an absolute headache maintenance-wise, esp compared to the MR2. 91 Stealth

Kinja'd!!!

Thoughts?

How was Lasik? I’m content with my contacts, and I’m a designer so I really should have some thin glasses, but the idea of just waking up and seeing has some appeal.

MR2. The Stealth is DSM trash.

I want to say the Stealth... I want to tell you that’s a good idea... But I mean.. just buy the Toyota.. You probably can’t afford to keep the R/T on the road. Seriously that’s a 500k car! if it’s only 4k for sale, you know it needs work.. ;)

seriously if the stealth isn’t junk buy the stealth...

how ever...

just buy the Toyota...

I’m quite happy with it. I’d had contacts since I was 7, so 17 yrs with them. It was just time. I dont think my vision is improved (it could be, but without a side by side comparison, Idk how I’d ever tell) , but it’s at least the same but with the added benefit of being able to always see and not deal with contacts. Side-effects/downsides seem minimal (it was a month ago, no longer having dry eyes or anything).

MR2, it’s a better car, light and fun.

I’ve never driven the Stealth, but I did drive an AW11 Mr. Two once. It’s a light and lively car. I’m currently considering the MR2 Spyder. Not sure yet, but it’s interesting.

That’s actually a pretty solid deal on the MR2 considering how clean it looks and how much all that T3 stuff costs. Not a fan of the brake booster delete though. Power brakes are a good thing.

Between the two, definitely MR2! What are you trying to use the vehicle for, whats your budget, and what is your daily? Theres bound to be other vehicles worth considering as well. If reliability is not a priority, I imagine an FB/FC Rx7 could be something fun to consider. Or a Miata. Maybe even a Fox body mustang should be compared.

Yea it looks way cleaner than most of the other Mk1s on CL. And its the more desirable years (Mk1b) bc of the trans. Maybe I’ll have to check it out this weekend. I think my biggest question would just be the state of the engine and trans (if it needs a clutch, etc).

I think the MR2 Spyder (I’m assuming youre talking about the third gen) is the lightest and the highest hp one. That’s gotta be good for something! Also happens to be the ugliest though.

Lightest, most powerful, and easiest to find in good condition for cheap, but I still cant get over the looks. Such a shame.

Current daily is a 84 Mercedes 300d. Reliability is relatively important, basically I’d like to be able to depend on it if the Merc ever needs to stay at home or go into the shop for a day and I still need to get to work.

Miata is probably an answer, but I like to be different. I thought about Fox bodys for awhile, but they seem like more of a platform to turn into whatever you want, and I just dont have the space for more of a project car right now.

Without a doubt AW11

I’ve owned an AW11 MR2 and it was not the epitome of reliability that everyone gushed it would be. When it ran well it was awesome though. I currently have an FB RX7 and it is quite fun too, but not as kart feeling as the AW11. My dad had a 91 stealth base model and it was fun to drive too. I would go for the RT if you want a stealth, more power and better looks. I agree that AW11 is on the high side. I paid 3500 for mine with less than 100,000 miles on it and no rust whatsoever and I still over paid some. All that being said, the AW11 was the most fun, followed by the FB RX7, then the Stealth. NA miata would slot in ahead of the FB.

As most others have said, MR2 all day long. Simpler car with a better reputation for reliability and presumably cheaper parts. Also light and mid-engined…get that itch scratched!

The Stealth will be nose heavy I would imagine and probably complicated to maintain/repair.

p.s. – just noticed you’re in the bay area. When I lived there I was casually entertaining an MR2 as well…didn’t find anything nearly as clean for such a reasonable price. I would certainly go take a look at that car. What’s up with the door card btw? Might be a relatively easy fix from a pick-n-pull but is there a story behind that?

I daily a 26 year old Turbo AWD Mitsubishi. And one that’s a good bit simpler than the TTV6 in the Stealth. It might be do-able, but it won’t be cheap. if having a back seat is of no consern than but the MR2.

It’s definitely the prettiest but also the heaviest by a couple hundred pounds. Not a deal breaker by any means, just worth noting a guess. I think I like the look of the aw11 more though. Friend of mine had an sw20 and it was pretty fun though. Non turbo versions are affordable but if you want the turbo it’ll cost ya.

I suppose you’re right. But it is also the most practical and spacious! I hope you do get an AW11, I’d love to hear about it
