Kinja'd!!!

Our kitchen at work is always stocked with fancy/pretentious/healthy snacks and drinks. I work across the hall from the marketing guy, and he and I are always discussing snack/drink packaging. This afternoon we strolled in for coffee and seltzer, and noticed some new snacks!

“Seaweed chips!?” We said in unison. We each picked up a pack and started to laugh. “Is this a joke? No way there is anything in here.” He said as we shook the packaging around. In fact there was a stack of “seaweed chips” in the package just like the ones picture above.

I’m waiting for his take on them, but I don’t think I like em. I just ate “chip” number 4, and I don’t think I’m going to make it through the rest.

I was imagining something with the consistency of tortilla chips, but made from seaweed. It was not like that. It’s like eating the cellophane from a pack of cigarettes flavored with grocery store sushi that has been left out for too long, slightly flavored with onion...

Yep #5 seals the deal, they’re gross.

I eat seaweed like the Deep South eats fried chicken. YMMV.

Oh I’m down with seaweed, I love a good seaweed salad on a tuna steak. I also love sushi, but these “chips” are terrible.

Someone put some of these out in our bistro at work a while back. They’re disgusting.

It’s like someone was eating a sushi roll and thought “you know what would be great? Just eating this tiny layer of green that I can’t even taste and mostly just provides structural integrity.”

I grab some from Kroger every now and then; they have “wasabi” flavored once which I like.

and hey, they might help make sure you get enough iodine.

Hah I think I’ll stick to my normal “lunch” of coffee and a hand full of cashews.

They’re really good when drinking too much sake.

that’s just some nori with some flavoring.

yes, i’d eat that but its much better with some rice. “chips” makes you expect something its not.

Why the heck would you eat fried seaweed straight and not wrapped around something? The whole point of those packages normally is so you can scoop some rice into them, roll, and munch - all one eating process. It’s possible to eat the flakes/sheets straight, but it’s not normal.

I mean, is this some kind of devious plan to take normal eat-with-rice seaweed packs and market them to people who don’t eat rice *too*?

The only way to make it into something better for straight munching would be to laminate like 5 sheets together or laminate them *with* something. Ordinary sheets as “chips”... why?
