“But we’re going to a restaurant.”
“I can eat quick and then we’ll go.”
“So you’re not eating there?”
“I’ll get a drink. But I already brought food. I told you that.”
“But then you said you wanted to go out to lunch.”
“I said I’d go with you.”
“But not to eat?”
“No, why would I spend money?”
“Yeahhh... um. I think it’s actually weirder to eat in a restaurant with someone who isn’t eating than it is to eat alone. Soooo...”
Sigh

At the same time, you only want them there if they are going to eat? We have a coworker that eats later but still comes out with us to socialize.

Understandable. He’s on a budget and saving up. Already brought food but wanted to keep you company. What a nice guy! :)

Simple solution it’s called supplemental lunch and is the same idea as second breakfast.

On one hand, he’s probably trying to save and that’s understandable. Gotta respect someone who’s trying to save money and packs lunch. And he’s willing to keep you company. Seems like a solid guy. On the other hand though, it is a little strange to eat with someone watching.

Well, I think it makes sense in a group. But two people having lunch and only one eating? That’s kind of weird.

That’s sort of my problem. I appreciate the thought, but it’s just kind of weird to sit and eat with someone else doing nothing, especially at a restaurant.

My buddy just brings his lunch when he goes out to eat with us. We don’t exactly go to classy places when we head out.

In this case, it’s mostly because it was just the two of us. I feel like it’s a lot less weird if there’s a group.

What? You have a weird co worker.

Well, we all have a different definition of weird. I think it’s perfectly fine, as anything beats sitting in the office!

The ONLY way this makes ANY sense is if the “I’ll get a drink” means “I’ll have at least 2 martinis while you eat”.
Otherwise he’s a nut.

Was it only the two of you? If so, I would just reschedule. That would be quite awkward. If it was a group, it would still be weird, but sometimes its nice to just get out of the office.

I have the same dilemma with splitting a meal. Sometimes it makes sense when it’s a large meal. Other times when it’s just a burger I always feel awkward.

Either she doesn’t want to go with you (thinking it looks like a date or something) or she is “very frugal” and don’t have the money to pay for her restaurant meal.
Thats how I look at it

We’ve gone out to lunch fairly often, so it isn’t that. It’s pretty much just that she’s cheap and didn’t want to eat out when she already had food, so I guilted her into rescheduling for next week.
