Kinja'd!!!

Read this piece and tell me what Jack Baruth is having on his pipe when he wrote it.

He seems to underestimate the power of hype. Or maybe he’s right, and the 996 will be left in the cold forever.

I think he is more or less right about the 996 as he mentions the variants that will appreciate. The part at the end about all cars being electric in 30 years, I’m doubting.

He’s smoking a cigarette in one of those snobby holders because he’s a snob. A snob who is obsessed with using fancy words for their own sake which makes him sound more snobby.

Here’s where his argument fails, yes they built a ton of them, but because of that in 15 years they will be few and far between because of various engine issues and the fact that they are seen as the disposable Porsche 911. 15 years ago a 944 Turbo in good shape was a disposable Porsche now they are worth something.

I’m not disputing anything. I said it could go either way.

It’s the malaise era Vette - somebody is going to think they are cool eventually, (I wish Porsche had put the 4s nose on all of them - so much better than the base.)

He didn’t see it coming and therefore didn’t write the article two years ago and since he can’t be an early-adopter on the 996 hype train he has to shit on it because he’s incapable of writing articles that aren’t polarizing in some form or fashion.

I say this as a person who embodies the same traits and recognizes them instantly.

This is brilliant. If Jack Baruth convinces everyone to not buy the 996, then I can afford one in a few years.

Natural selection will take its course and survivors will be worth something to people. Someone compared the 996 to the 944 turbo, and that’s probably apt. I think E36 M3s are coming out on the other side of this a little as well. Nice, reasonable mileage examples seem to be creeping up in price.

996s are probably going to go through a pretty rough decade of being modded, and tracked and generally treated like any sports car at the bottom of its depreciation curve and numbers of nicely cared for cars will shrink. But a few people are just going to keep caring for and driving theirs. And in 5-10 years, those cars will probably appreciate.

That could very well be the case but I still dislike his writing style and constant references to how fast he is on a track.
