Kinja'd!!!

The FP post on the new Subaru BRZ tS mentions it’s not a turbo, but doesn’t link to the Subaru press release with full details. So here they are for those of you too lazy to google for the press release, or look at twitter, or any of the other auto websites that already posted the details.

Chassis

STI-tuned Sachs shocks & springs
Engine compartment V-braces
Subframe draw stiffeners
STI 18” wheels
215/40-18 Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires
Brembo brakes front & rear

Kinja'd!!!

Exterior

STI front, side and rear lower spoilers
Rear diffuser
Bigass adjustable carbon fiber rear wing
Cherry Blossom Red accents on the grille and rear diffuser
Black mirrors, shark fin antenna & badges
Fog lights deleted + STI covers

Kinja'd!!!

Interior

Red leather/alcantara seats with embroidered tS logos
Alcantara on doors, dash, steering wheel & shifter/e-brake boots
Red contrast stitching
Red front seat belts
New instrument visor, center console & door trim

No, there’s no turbo, and not even any more power. Waaa!

But it has a bunch of stuff you’d want for getting a BRZ ready for the track, so that’s something.

This is the biggest troll I’ve seen from any automaker.

They could literally add carbon ceramic brakes at no extra charge and the FP would still complain about power.

But it’s not. They built the perfect car that everyone asked for before the 86's were released. That’s when enthusiasts realized that low power/extremely low torque wasnt that fun.

I love the BRZ. My best friend had one, and it is still the only electronic rack that I have enjoyed. I drove it stock, and I drove it after he added a centrifugal supercharger/suspension parts. I hate to sound like the rest of the internet, but I need the powa!

The trackdaybros would complain about carbon ceramics because of the cost to maintain them.

Well, when does FP ever actually have real information?

I test drove one once and I think what it boils down to is you sit low down in the thing looking out over the tall dash and through small windows, which combined with the capable chassis tells you “this is a serious performance machine,” not something that’s a light, simple, chuckable car. Instead it’s been made artificially chuckable by equipping it with low rolling resistance tires from the Prius.

As soon as you add proper tires, the limits become so much higher that it’s easily ready for a more appealing motor. That wouldn’t have to be something ridiculously more powerful. Compare it to say, a Honda S2000, which itself isn’t super powerful (although it does have 40 hp or whatever it is more than the Toyobaru), you get the crazy VTEC banshee scream and the pleasure of really grabbing the car by the scruff.

But since Subaru has been shoving turbo boxer motors in cars for a long time, everyone’s like, “YOU ALREADY MAKE THE MOTOR WE WANT IN THIS CAR, JUST PUT THE MOTOR IN THE CAR ALREADY!”

I was being serious in an ironic-sounding way. Carbon ceramics are of little benefit to trackdaybros because they can get the braking capability they need from track pads, fluid, etc. They’re going to chew up brakes so might as well have regular iron ones with reasonably priced consumable parts.

Nice! Very tempting to pick up one used for $15k and slap a supercharger into it...

I do think that the car had a purpose and that it was designed extremely well to fulfill it.

But a lot of people relate the STi to a more hardcore version, associated with more power. I don’t disagree that it is the car that enthusiasts craved for, but it was a chance to for them to go nuts.

It was scary fun to drive. He sold it to a guy with a 700hp GTR! That guy let us take turns ripping it up and back on the highway while he tested out the BRZ. It was for sale again not too long ago.

Did he do a build thread you can point me to?

My only gripe with his was that the suspension was so stiff that the car was basically unlivable for more than 30 minutes at a time. We had to drive it back from the beach (super hungover) and it was unbearable. We had to swap drivers twice during a 2 hour ride.

I don’t think he did a build thread, but I’m sure hes got a ton of pictures. I’ll ask him to send em and do a post on it.

I know that it had to go to the tuning place twice during install because of a licensing issue with the software for the engine mgmt bit.

I probably wouldn’t do much with the suspension. Probably just supercharger & wheels/tires.

Thanks.

For someone with 3 kids who lusts after a 981 Cayman S, getting that level of performance for half the price with back seats is very attractive.

It may or may not have enough power. I don’t know. Never driven one, not in the market for one. With that in mind:

- If it was underpowered before, it’ll be more so now with all the extra crap on it.

- Saying there will be an STI, hyping it up, and then not adding power is basically trolling your (potential) customers.

Nah, Subaru built the right car for the wrong decade.

They built the car we asked for in the 90's and 00's. Now that turbos have become ubiquitous, we expect torque and the ability to gain 50 hp with a simple reflash.

Only 215s? I know it’s not crazy fast but those tyres still seem narrow for a modern sports car.

That’s kind of what I meant by the last sentence. My FiST has nearly double the torque of an 86 with a simple flash tune.

They’re on the narrow side but at roughly 2800 lbs/1275 kg—see, I included metric since you have Twingo in your name and spelled tyres with a Y!—it’s probably enough tread on the ground, especially sticky summer tires.

If I were to guess, they wanted to maintain a similar overall diameter as the usual 215/45-17 tires so as to not need to recalibrate the speedometer/odometer. The stock wheels are 17x7”. In theory they could’ve gone with a 17x8” wheel and 235/40-17 tire but the most of the tires available in that size are fully track-focused. I suppose that would fit with the character of the car.

Haha thanks for the US to Euro conversion.

Yeah that all makes sense and I guess they’re not specifically going to prepare it for hard track use anyway. More spirited road driving, even if they do show press photos on tracks. Trackdaybros will probably swap the wheels straight away anyway.

I did a quick check and 245/35-18 is the exact same diameter as 215/40-18 and there are plenty of tires in that size. Ideally Subaru would’ve picked that size and an 18x8.5” wheel but hey, can’t have everything.

Yeah I guess that’d be a pretty noticable cost increase.
