Kinja'd!!!

I have a weird problem. I use the same monitor for two computers, my gaming rig and my laptop. I do not use a KVM, I switch inputs on the monitor. The problem is that the icons on the desktop of the laptop are larger. The toolbar is the same on both desktops. In fact it has changed the size of things on webpages. Like youtube plays in a smaller window, and I have thoroughly gone through my youtube settings. I have check all the scaling settings in the control panel and they are all set to 100%, just like my gaming rig. I have gone through video card settings, and did and looked on google. Youtube says their webpage will self adjust the size of the player based on resolution. It is running the same resolution on both computers. It is affecting my youtube viewing and it must end.

While I was re-reading my paragraph, it gave me an idea. I right clicked on the desktop and under View “Medium Icons” was selected. So I chose small thinking that would fix the problem, no it made them really tiny. So I chose medium again and they are now the proper size. Youtube is still affected though.

K20 swapped Integra for your time.

What are the resolutions of the monitor and the laptop, and physical size? Sounds like a difference in DPI between the two.

Different resolutions between laptop display and monitor will cause desktop icons to change size and position when you switch from higher to lower resolution.

Have you checked the DPI settings?

The laptop has not left the dock in months. I never use the built in screen. This has just happen within the last few weeks, it finally bugged me enough to do something about it. It may just be a bug, and a fresh install may be in order. It was an upgrade from 7, it might be time anyway.

Are the displays identical? If not, well, life will be easier if they are.

I’ve had a good deal of experience using KVMs and they are not created equally and I do my best to make room for a second monitor or a second entire compter.

The laptop stays on a dock and only uses an external monitor, the same monitor that the gaming rig. The screen on the laptop is 13.3” 1366x768, but like I said I never use the laptops screen.

Which version of Windows?

In any event right-click on the desktop and do:

The look at your control panel here:

Probably your desktop is at 100% and your laptop is at something higher because they don’t want things to be tiny on the smaller screen.

The only way I have found to change DPI is to adjust the scaling. It is set at 100% on both computers. I might try a reset of Windows 10 tonight to see if it makes a difference. I used the reset feature before on another system and it was pretty slick, and I don’t care about a single file on that laptop.

Nope they are both at 100% and they are both Windows 10.

Hmm, weird, I’m out of ideas for youtube.

It is the same exact monitor. My gaming rig is pretty loud, so I use a laptop when I’m not gaming. The laptop sits on a dock and it’s not a big deal to move my keyboard/mouse dongle over to laptop when I want to use it. I don’t really switch back and forth, I’m using one or the other, so I don’t have a KVM.

It still switches back to rendering for the laptop display when you switch monitor inputs.

Check updates on the one with the bigger stuff. I had an update pack go out to my laptop recently that did make things smaller than they were.

Is the browser at the same zoom level on both? If they are, try zooming the one in and out till youtube fills the screen again.

This has caught me off guard so many times. Left palm pushes down the CTRL button and then I scroll - everything is squinty. This picture is from Chrome, but every browser has a similar zoom setting.

I never accidentally hit ctrl and scrolled, I just used to love 110% until I learned that youtube hates that specific level of zoom, a lot.

And the external monitor, size and native resolution?

21.6" 1080p. I don’t use the computers concurrently. The gaming rig heats up the room too much to leave on all the time. The laptop is there just so I have something to use at my desk at home.

I don’t usually have the computers on at the same time, but all it would take is one time pretty much. I get where you are going.

OK will do. I haven’t had the laptop on much, been playing too much Overwatch.

I’d lay odds it’s browser font settings.
