I went out to the Garrison Brothers Distillery w/ a few friends today and we bottled some bourbon. This is special stuff. Bourbon BECOMES bourbon when it goes into the barrel. This bourbon was put into the barrel on November 16, 2012, which was a Friday - Opening Day at COTA. The other 2 guys I was bottling with have also been at COTA from the beginning.

So, today we dumped the barrels, added hill country rainwater to proof the liquor to 92 proof (46% ABV), and put it in bottles. Due to state liquor laws, they’ll have to ship these bottles to the distributor who will then ship them to the liquor store by my house where I can go pick them up. After that, it’s off to the engraver to laser etch some stuff on the bottles.

There was a lot of sampling going on today, and this stuff is delicious.

Where do you live? It’s a TINY distillery and may not be available in your neck of the woods. The first bottle I ever got (in 2011) was from a batch of about 1000 bottles that were only sold in 5 counties in central Texas. The regular bottles (not Single Barrel) are available statewide now and also in several other states.

Single Barrel is much rarer and is around $100/bottle. It depends on where you buy it. When you buy a whole barrel (or 4 barrels like we did) you get a break on the price. I expect we’ll get these bottles (4 barrels yielded 87 bottles total) somewhere around 90/bottle.

I went to their website and I can buy it online but you the bottles range $80-$200 a bottle that way.

That $200 bottle is 2015 Cowboy and it’s been out of stock since about 2 days after it was released. Cowboy is released every other year and is cask strength (around 128 proof - 64% ABV) and unfiltered.

I have a bottle (1 of 600) of 2013 Cowboy and it’s worth a couple grand now. 2017 Cowboy is coming soon. and I’ll probably grab a couple bottles.

Come to a race at COTA and try it at any number of bars in town. If you like it, hit a liquor store and take some home!

Awesome! Buying my own barrel is one of my life goals. I’ve never had any Garrison Brother’s whiskey. I’ll have to keep an eye out on my next Spec’s run.

Specs will definitely have it. Are you in the Austin area? The distillery is between Johnson City and Fredericksburg, just an hour from downtown.

I’m in the El Paso area. I’ll add these guys to my list of places to visit next time I’m in Austin, especially since I’d be driving right past it.

I didn’t know Specs had made it that far west. The flagship stores are amazing.

Spec’s is a great place. On my side of town, we’ve got both a smaller store and full supermarket-sized one.
