The only good way to write a date is yyyy-mm-dd

Base 10 is a trash counting system and should be abandoned immediately.

yyyy-mm-dd sure made the most sense when I used to unload my digital camera into designated folders. That way I could organize alphabetically and get it to be chronological.

The American date format actually makes sense if you think of it like this:

There are 12 months.
There are up to 31 days.
Years are a 4 digit number for now.

Basically our date format goes from lowest to highest numerical order. The rest of the world does it based on length of time. Days are shorter so they’re first, then months, then years. Which is better? That’s up for discussion.

Otherwise yeah, our counting system was clearly developed by really drunk (or stupid) people.

Way to cherry pick there.

inches in a foot - 12

feet in a yard - 3

yards in a chain - 22

chains in a furlong - 10

furlongs in a mile - 8

Just because Americans are better at math, and can multiply/divide by something other than 10/100/1000 doesn’t make a system ‘retarded’.

Also, the base of Celsius is -273.15 degrees.

- I’m down with inches and feet, the foot is a good “in-between” measurement that doesn’t exist in metric and is a more natural length, which means you can get a good idea of somethings size without any measuring tools. And 12 inches to a foot makes it easier to use fractional units than if there were 10, and in construction at least fractions are way nicer to use than decimals. Though if I’m honest I’d prefer 8 or 16 inches to a foot. Yards, miles can gtfo. I can relate to pounds because that has always been what I’ve used, but it doesn’t really make sense. Ounces I don’t know what to do with.

- Fahrenheit is a stupid scale afaic but the numbers aren’t just arbitrary. Unrelated to pure water and unrelated to each other, but there’s a reason those numbers are where they are. It’s a divisions-of-12 type scale, probably because of feet/inches. 96F was supposed to be human body temp (as close as it could be measured at the time, anyway) and 0F was water+ice+salt (probably because it would have been the coldest possible man-made temperature at the time). Celsius was a different kind of stupid originally, too. Freezing of water was 100C and boiling water was 0C.

- Fwiw I prefer to say “June 7th” over “the 7th of June”. Therefore it makes more sense to me to use mm-dd-yyyy over dd-mm-yyyy. Personally I’d prefer to see yyyy-mm-dd though, so there’s that.

Side notes: I don’t live in the USA, and you can blame England for most of this, not the USA.

Base 8 is just as bad; only divisible by 2 and 4

Base 12 is better; divisible by 2, 3, 4, and 6. Also, humans are supposed to have 12 fingers, so base 10 is just another injustice perpetrated by the 10-fingered mutants.

Nope, -459.67 is equally bad, because both systems were developed long before absolute zero was understood.

Celsius has only an added level of utility when measuring distilled water temperature, which is relevant for almost no one.

For the average person, room temperature and the typical range of their local weather is all that is relevant. For anyone in a scientific field, an different range is going to be appropriate, and is unlikely to revolve around the matter transition temperatures of one specific compound.

US / Imperial: 1 pound-mass = 1 pound-force

The problem with that is “pound-mass” is a fiction created just to try to correspond with the unit of weight. The Imperial unit of mass is the slug , which is definitely not a commonly familiar term.

I don’t have a problem with them not abandoning it entirely--but they should have thrown some things out the window. Kg is a better weight measurement. Litres are better volume units. Feet/inches are great, the mile is here to stay so meh, millimeters are good for precision engineering, centimeters suck for construction imo, the yard might as well be replaced with the meter--they’re close enough.

Most all vehicle dynamic equations I’ve come across use pound-mass, not slugs. Ye olde British Gravitational units of olde, English Engineering standard has superseeded it in most engineering.

Kinja'd!!! "ateamfan42" (ateamfan42)
06/07/2017 at 16:48, STARS: 0

Kg is a better weight measurement.

I have to disagree with this one, because kilograms are a terrible weight measurement— not being weight at all. Grams (and kilograms) are units of mass. Getting even the most hardcore metric fanboys to use newtons seems neigh impossible, though.

Kinja'd!!! "Smallbear wants a modern Syclone, local Maple Leafs spammer" (smallbear94)
06/07/2017 at 17:37, STARS: 0

Ok, but kg are the equivalent to pounds, no? better than that. Whatever.

Kinja'd!!! "ateamfan42" (ateamfan42)
06/08/2017 at 07:44, STARS: 1

Ok, but kg are the equivalent to pounds, no?

But they aren’t equivalent. Kilogram is a measure of mass; pounds are units of weight. They are measuring different (but related) properties.

As bizarre as it may sound to some folks, correcting converting between the metric and imperial units means pounds convert to newtons and kilograms convert to slugs.
