At least I think it was an EX... Anyway, my friend just got her license and got her mom’s old Civic as her first car. It’s actually pretty nice and seems really well screwed together for an economy car (I guess that comes with being a Honda.) Plus it has factory nav. What econobox had factory nav in 2006?!

I’ve always liked this gen of Civic outside of the 17 mile long dashboard. The white over beige of hers goes together well too, but god does it need a wash.

Interesting. One of my friends has a reasonably well loaded ‘09, with heated leather and whatnot, but no nav. That does surprise me that it’s got that. But yeah, I’ve driven it quite a bit, and if I had to own a car of that sort I’d be perfectly fine with a Civic.

This one has manual cloth seats and a urethane wheel which makes the nav even more odd. It’s the most luxurious thing other than the sunroof.

I wanted to ask to drive it but decided otherwise for some reason. Next time we hang out I might ask.

My sister got a base-model 06 Civic as her first car. It was a POS. Granted it was 10 years old when she got rid of it, but the starter was having issues and the headliner was coming off. It was a decent drive though. Solid engine.

Starter issues and a headliner coming off seem like small potatoes in the gist of things for a first car.

My better half has been driving a 2006 Civic EX Coupe with a 5 speed manual for the past 6 or so years. No navigation in hers. I like it, but I’m not crazy about the shifter. I honestly liked the 5 speed in my old 1990 Accord EX better, but that was years ago. Maybe I’m just biased because of how much I like my Miata’s 5 speed now.

That Civic is solid though.

My car doesn’t have any of those problems though, and it’s 13 years old.

If my car breaks down soon I’m blaming you.

It’s okay, I praised Active Fuel Management yesterday so now half my truck’s lifters will probably shit the bed.

My mother in law has an 06 Civic, and it’s been a great car. Hers has very low miles because they bought it from a family friend that was going into a nursing home and was the proverbial church on Sunday and grocery once a week driver.

Thankfully, my mother in law doesn’t drive much either. I rode in the car with her once, and we only went three miles. I thought for sure I was going to die at least 7 times. She can’t turn her head left so to change lanes she puts on her blinker and prays there’s an opening. I wish that was a joke; it’s not!

I worked in a Honda body shop when the 8th gen was new. They’re pretty nice cars and built well. But everything is a little more complex and over built than it needs to be.

A Corolla from the same year is a “better” car. Rides smoother and quieter. While the Si would of course be more fun.

Satnav was an (expensive) option in Mazda3 of the time.

I have an ‘08 EX-L with all the options ticked and trust me they aren’t missing anything by not having the built in Nav... other than a PCMCIA slot for loading a memory card into that you can play MP3's from. Seriously Honda what is the deal with that. I mean at least it wasn’t like a Sony Memory Stick or something, but really PCMCIA?..

But seriously the built in navigation system just dates the car and feels hilariously ancient compared to just using google maps on my phone or something. I can probably count on one finger the number of times I have actually used the it in the last few years. I’d love to get a new head unit but at the end of the day just to get it working as well as the factory one it isn’t worth the effort or cost.

They are surprisingly nice little cars. I have an 08 with all the options ticked including leather and honestly the only thing I wish it had was a manual or at least a little more power. But as something to use as a simple daily driver appliance car it’s hard to beat.

I’ve considered trying to wring a little more power out of the engine or even looking into what it would take to swap in a manual transmission, but as the old adage goes “if it an’t broke...” So naturally I go out every day and try my hardest to grenade the transmission on the way to work... lol.

But in all seriousness My son is still about six years out from driving and I have every intention of either giving it to him someday or just letting him use it as his first car. Because baring anything catastrophic happening to it I honestly don’t see any reason to get rid of it. It’s not fancy but it’s comfortable and reliable.
