I want to do a compilation video of people reacting to my Alfa Romeo, sort of like what Doug has done with some of his cars, only this would have barely any editing and be done solely from my dash cam. In many of the clips I already have, people approach the car directly and their faces are thus shown on the camera. I know Nebraska is a one-party recording consent, meaning that I do not legally need their permission to have recorded them conversing with me in public. My question is, do you think it would be rude to show their faces? I haven’t found a good way to block them out in iMovie, but I could maybe give it a shot. Do you guys think that would be necessary/worth it? Is what I’m doing considered creepy if I show faces? Any opinions would be sincerely appreciated.

I say don’t worry about it. Obviously if someone says “hey, that’s me in your video, I don’t want to be online” or something, try to edit it out. But otherwise.... Eh. Privacy is losing the battle with technology, people need to except that

Yeah I’d totally honor any requests to be removed.

I don’t necessarily see the harm, since they’re approaching your car first and you’re not photographing them randomly. I think it’s more of a value judgement on your part, slightly complicated by the fact that you’re putting the video out on the web and not keeping it for your own private use.

I will say that when I lived in New York, it was weirdly common for tourists to take photos of me. Like, literally step in front of me on the sidewalk and snap a photo and walk off or photograph me while I was sitting on a bench. I don’t know if they thought I looked like a New Yorker or what. I thought it was funny, but it was also kind of obnoxious.

It also made me very conscious not to go about photographing people when I traveled unless I asked them first.

Like this awesome Uzbek grandfather with his grandkids, who then invited me to lunch and gave me food and vodka. So, clearly asking has its benefits.

Man... the only people who talk to me about my Alfa are the homless.

... maybe I need to move.

Weird. What’s it look like? And where do you live?

Haha like a series 3 spider. I think it is mostly my commute takes me past a lot of homeless hangouts and they’re sort of hard to avoid with the top down. That said, one did correctly identify the make, model, and series. Allegedly he used to work for an upholsterer in... some city. Forget where he said.

I think the important thing is to edit out any identifying information. If someone mentioned their name or address on camera, for example.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with doing that. They are in a public space, aren’t doing anything embarrassing, and it’s not like you are creepily following them around.
