75 cent premium upcharge is well within the range of worth complaining about.

Last week I stopped at a station that had premium a full dollar more than regular. I didn’t even get out of the car, just went to another station a couple miles away and saved 35 cents a gallon.

Wow... that’s a huge premium for premium.

And I thought we paid a lot extra for premium in the Toronto area... typically 10-15% more.

Of course regular unleaded costs around CAD$1.10/L here... which is around US$3.10/gallon

That’s dumb, why? You could de tune the car to run on regular? And over the life of the car what do you expect the cost to be? Assume 100k life, 20 mpgs, $0.50 differece it’s only $2500 of the 100mile life....I have a 06 car with 80k miles, a 95 with 120k, an 06 with 75k, and a 09 with 100k. So avg cost per year for premium is maybe $250. I would easily spend 250 a year to have the trubo motor instead of the NA, or the v8 instead of the v6.....or any higher performance model......also end the end you can turn your own car to run on reg if you are ok losing power.....or you could move 6000ft above sea level and leave your tune and just run regular.

Last I checked there are only 3 stations in my entire state that offer 93 octane or higher. Closest being 60 miles away.....

Counting for currency conversion factors, that’s still slightly less than what I’m paying for regular, ~3.09/gal.

I’m a college student and I’m pretty low on funds and drive like 15-20,000 miles a year to commute to work and school. Gas was something I was hoping to save on when I bought my 05 Corolla to replace my 05 Crown Vic.

This. Even up to summer ‘13 when I was working at my old car garage it was 30 cents/gallon upcharge. Now I’m lucky if I can find less than 50

Assuming 15K miles per year at 20 mpg and the prices I saw at the pump today:

15000 miles/year ÷ 20 mpg = 750 gal/year

Regular: 750 gal x $2.199 = $1649.25

Premium: 750 gal x $2.949 = $2211.75

$2211.75 - $1649.25 = $562.50

That’s more than double your estimate and a 34% increase over regular.

The car that gas is going into was purchased for $4500 and is now worth about $1500. Which means initially the annual fuel cost was half the vehicle’s value and now I pay more for gas every year than I could get selling the car. If it took regular instead, I’d barely be below the break-even point.

If it were a $10K+ car the difference would be irrelevant, but in the current situation it isn’t.

I have let mileage/fuel type make this decision before. It was the worst mistake I ever made. I would gladly spend the extra money for the car I want. I call it the smile factor. My happiness and sanity is worth more than a couple hundred bucks a year. When I did this, I was so miserable I was looking at cars in 6 months and traded/bought another car within 11 months and ate a ton of depreciation. Who saved money now, not me. This however was the best decision ever as I began to enjoy driving again and did not hate every time I turned the key. I will never buy another car based on mileage, or whatever type of fuel it takes.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

*Were* complaining? That implies I’ve stopped complaining.

The price-gouging premium upcharge thing is totally ridiculous now. Crossing the street can have an 80 cent difference in price. And all the stations took down their premium prices from the road signs, so you have no idea how much they are going to gouge until you get right up to the pump. Often the station with the lowest advertised price for regular is not the best for premium, because there is no logic to the upcharge.

Totally get that, my point was if the deal on the car is good go for it the you can always tune a car that runs on premium to run on regular. In some cases that just means rotating the distributor....for others that might cost something.

I think your Math is about the same, I was using the miles on my cars as an estimate of miles per year which is much lower than 15k I agree for a $4500 it wouldn’t be best to fill it with premium if costs savings is your main goal...but this is a car site soo it might not be....and the car I have the most miles per year on is a TDI so kinda moot to consider it. My other point was you can retune almost any car to run on lower octane. Or if you live at elevation and you might not need as high of octane until you go down to sea level.

Thats still expensive. And its not even consistent anymore across the board. When you have to “shop” for gas, cmon man you know its a problem all around.
