It has been done.  No more gold bow tie!

Well, I’ve gone and done it. I kinda-sorta took the consensus of the fine folks of oppositelock on this one. For those that didn’t read the earlier post I was tired of looking at the gold bow ties on the front and back of my Volt.

Kinja'd!!!

The main suggestion was go to with blue to both match the car itself and be a throwback to the earlier blue bow tie from the 60's to the 80's. This is what I ended out with.

Kinja'd!!!

As I’m sure you can spot that’s not plain blue. I went with a vinyl that had a bit of a weave patter, and oddly enough there is actually a weave to the vinyl and not just a printed on weave patter. I like that it lets the bow-tie still stand out, but I also feel it is a bit of a throwback to the earlier bow tie designs. Like this one:

Kinja'd!!!

You can see that in this emblem the bow tie has a textured look to it. As the former owner of a 1958 Impala I liked the concept.

I did the one on the back of the car as well. The front was actually easier because the division between the gold bow tie and silver surround was better defined. All told from cleaning to final cut took less than 20 minutes.

Kinja'd!!!

I have no idea why that posted sideways. It was oriented the proper way in my photo folder.

I even tried to do the do the bow tie on the steering wheel. Unfortunately, the edge of that bow tie is chamfered towards the chrome surround making it much less defined and harder to work around. I still have enough excess material to make another couple of attempts when I have a little more time.

I had said black in your previous post ... I was wrong.

the “sideways” thing happens a lot on phones which put the orientation in the metadata. Then Kinja apparently rotates it. You know, “helpfully.”

I had figured it was something along those lines. If it had happened with my first picture I might have been more upset. Thanks for confirming it for me.

Much better than the gold.

The grill bars are really speaking out to me though. They need to be black or replaced with something that looks more like a traditional slat.

Oh, and since you have some blue leftover, maybe make the little lightning bolt in the Volt insignia that color?

Looks good! I wish the Acura logo was more solid so I could do something like this!

Actually, part of the lightning bolt has broken off on the rear logo, or I would consider doing that. I’m debating between getting a new V or just removing the nameplate.

I have several thoughts on what I want to do with the grille plates, but I would want to find a set of used ones to experiment on. Replacements sell for around $200 so that will have to wait for now until the grille from a wrecked car shows up on ebay at a more reasonable price.

I bought it off of amazon; they were listed as “vividvinyl”. I got two 4"X11" pieces for $8. My only complaint is they shipped in a box that required them to be bent in the middle so I had to warm them up and sit them under a heavy book for a couple days to flatten them before I could put them on.

I’ve used vividvinyl a few times, I’ve been very happy. would recommend (this comment came off a lot of ebay feedbacky than I planned)

No problem what so ever. The vinyl itself feels very high quality, and my shipping issue was Amazons fault for not choosing the right packaging.

Looks away better, specially on the front. I need to do this on my front Mitsubishi badge. It originally had little pastiche jewels in the “diamonds” but they’ve long since fallen out.

I didn’t know the blue bowtie goes that far back, always thought it was 95-2002 thing.

The blue was used from very early in the days of Chevrolet. I believe it was first used in 1929, and that before that it was black.

P.S. I seriously wish I’d have bought a Volt sometimes. My commute is 9 miles each way so I could go ages without using any gasoline.

Mine is much further than the electric range, but it’s still a good fit for me. Though I do wish it had the backup camera. I sat in a Prius and ergonomically it wouldn’t work.

I have just over 100 miles round trip to drive, and I use 1.3 gallons of gas a day.

I really wish Chevy would just ditch the gold bowtie and return to the blue bowtie, and continue having the black bowtie as well as an option. It just looks better.

Kinja'd!!!

The gold badge just reminds me of all the crap GM made in the mid-2000s.

Have you seen how badly they half-asses the Holden badge on the Volt? It was stuck on over the center of the bow tie and still had the “wings” visible.
