Kinja'd!!!

Just got through fixing something for a second time - arbitrary changes made it need a fix, bad fix info given to me, then arbitrary meddling. GUESS WHAT IT DIDN’T FIT. Then there was the part with a fix left over from 4 years ago. And the part with the hinges installed backwards which was “missing”. And the “I don’t understand this” fix. And the “there’s a gap in this, should there be a gap in this?”. And the...

That first gif. That is the best gif. My favorite gif ever. It is applicable to most situations in life.

Since we sort of know each other in this space, I’ll mention that my wife’s brother put the business end of a .45 in his mouth a few years ago and took his own life. That gif of Archie Bunker hits kind of close to home. I’m not taking offense or anything, just sharing.

Peace, Yo.

Life’s kind of that way -. all things are somber, all things are funny, depending on the light and which window you’re sitting by... Not trying to make light (no pun intended), but a little dark humor and grimness are the lifeblood of society. If most people aren’t able to laugh a little at the very worst of things, nobody’d be able to grieve seriously - and some people get left out when it’s time to chuckle. The way of things. Carroll o’Conner was quite gifted, though - Archie’s quiet frustration and unnoticed mockery of his wife are as well delivered here without words as it’s possible to be, I think.

It’s excessively grim, but necessary. There’s also a Barney one from How I Met Your Mother, and one with Barney using his tie to string himself up. And an Al Bundy-fixing-noose-like-tie gif... come to think of it, there’s a lot of suicide/death humor in ‘70s-’80s sitcoms (which HIMYM is throwing back to), isn’t there?

Gee our old LaSalle ran great.

I particularly like just how little attention Edith is paying, and how much detail is going into Archie’s little performance for his own benefit. *inspects, tests trigger*, *flips open crane*, *draws out, inserts single bullet, closes*, *begins Russian Roulette*, *expressions of surprise, continuing*, “BLARGH”.

Trufax: I want a LaSalle. Preferably a ‘35.

Nah - if I get a GM car from the ‘30s, I want ALL of the cylinders. V8s and V12s are meh.

Well, see, if I get a ‘35 LaSalle, it will be for conversion to a V10 or flat 10 (aircraft jugs, air cooled), with the side hood vents converted to intakes.

Kinja'd!!!

I figure perversity in cylinder count and probably layout would offset some of the pain of not having a V16. Plus, you know, cheaper to do that *and* build an airplane engine than to lay hands on a V16 Caddy.

I like this idea - - as long as you get plenty of air across those cylinders, you should be good to go.

And yeah, I’m guessing you could build your car several times over, and still have money in the bank compared to that V16.

Stretch goal - build H-20 engine from two flat 10s on top of each other, feed top/bottom pairs with ten side-draft carbs.

Something like this then - but still air cooled? The air cooled part seems... challenging...

Nah. Just have enough spacing between the jugs, and I’m thinking pair the cylinders off for shared fins. Basically, like this Brough Superior Golden Dream (H4!) X 5 repeated stages:

Cooling duct robbed from a Deutz six running over the top:

You’d get a little hotter on the bottom cylinders, but with common jugs it wouldn’t ever get too bad. Think about it - 20 cylinder engine, 5L double-boxer with 250cc cylinders. The thing would run like a sewing machine .

Hmmm, wouldn’t a H24 actually be much smoother?

Not really, because a boxer H4 (as opposed to a pseudo-boxer H4) has totally self-contained perfect balance within its stage of four cylinders. The pseudo-boxer like above (common pins for cylinder pairs) is nearly perfect and would only be improved a tiny, tiny bit by pairing stages. Almost none.

Aha - that’s the bit that I was missing. I was thinking about the rows of 5 (or 6) not the sets of 4.

There’s balancing the overall masses, which each cylinder is already near perfect up and down in a bank, managing the side-to-side (counterweights), balancing the impulse shocks, etc. etc. Similarly to how V12s don’t improve that much on V10s, once you get everything evenly spaced you hit diminishing returns on reduction even without having to have intrinsically balanced banks - the H4 geometry just takes you from having quasi-balanced V-twin pairs and spacing them out evenly from one another to just going in multiple perfectly balanced stages.
