due to the idiocy and greed (and frankly, abrasiveness and dislike of the idea of having her as an adjacent-property neighbor) of owner #4 in the house (inherited from an estate) we put an offer in on, we have withdrawn our (unaccepted by #4: because she’s currently making money from the property with hay and lumber) offer on one house and are drafting a (fairly) low-ball as-is cash offer for a foreclosed property in a neighboring town... Our offer would be a VERY good deal if accepted, but the property taxes are highish, but the house is also genuinely lovely, and the land is something we can work with... Ahhhh! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhjghhhh!!!!!

/runs around like a chicken with its head cut off

it’s a really nice house, I kinda want it bad.

The city slicker in me appreciates a good location in the middle of things but in a secluded part of the middle of things. The gearhead in me appreciates a big enough yard to have an outbuilding for a bunch of cars. That and lack of noise are the only reasons I’d ever want to deal with a bunch of land.

Sheep farm. Not kidding. The land is actually the more important thing, the other place we had put an offer on had more, and better land, and a MUCH shittier house, and was cheaper, and had taxes that are about 25% of what this place has... but on the other hand this house kicks ass and we know what the bank paid for it vs. the appraised value and there’s a chance we can spend just over 50% of appraised value to acquire it, and as I said, the land is something we can work with... 67 acres, with about 22 currently open.

My unsolicited opinion is to buy the better spread and build the house you want.

The basil and chili pepper plants growing in pots on my deck are the full extent to which I work the land.

you haven’t dealt with the #4 buyer, frankly we don’t want her as a neighbor. she was demanding a 100-foot-wide deeded right of way through the most valuable timber on the property to an adjoining woodlot that she doesn’t even own yet and/or to purchase that 1/4 of the property AND take all three hay cuts from the land this year... we have 30 sheep in need of graze and winter hay this year. we are already cutting it close as far as timing goes, and as it stands right now we’re only talking about $30K difference between the two properties. There’s no way in hell we could build a home even remotely close to the one on the foreclosure property for $30k... and the 25 acre size difference between the two properties is entirely in woodlot that would need to be cleared before it can become pasture anyway....

we’re changing the name to better appeal to Boston and New York City metro area buyers. We have a pending contract with a major butcher-shop distributor in the Bos-Wash corridor. but yeah, we’re cool ;)

I admit to some considerable jealously over here. Spending a couple of weeks at my mom’s place reminded me of what I liked about living in the country. Even though it’s only five acres, there’s plenty of work around to keep me busy and out of the house. Getting back home reminded me that there’s work to be done at my own home, but with less than a quarter acre to work with and neighbors within spitting distance, it’s just not inspiring.

I am so torn. Right now my lady friend and myself are planning a move from Indiana to Florida. The thought of renting a place that doesn’t check all of our combined boxes is annoying me. I want to be very much not sensible and buy a place while she says to wait and make sure we want to stay. I know that’s the best route but I want to be able to have a garage and rabbits and customize the place. I’m very jealous of the people buying houses right now.

So... where’s the closest bus stop? And how long of a bus ride before you get to the closest subway?

the closest bus stop is only about 12 miles away actually, to the closest subway though... That would probably be the Montreal Metro, assuming you make all your connectors and its the day of the week that all the right schedules run, and you don’t get held up at the border... you could probably be there in about five hours, maybe six...

Same here sadly...it’d be cheaper without the cropping licence and the water allocation. The price has never been formally presented but I’d guess somewhere around AU$1.8 million...
