Is that a crack in body filler?

Yeah... I need to fix it. I dont have the money to have it fixed for me and I don’t have the time to do it myself... So I just keep dealing with the fact I hate my shit car sometimes.

Looks like a material failure. The only question is, did the material fail because of poor workmanship, or was someone mudding a quarter that really should’ve been replaced (excessive filler application)?

Was it a repair you had done, or from prior to your ownership? A lot of reputable shops offer lifetime warranties on both paint and body work.

If you do get a shop to warranty it, tell ‘em to take the quarter window out before paint next time :P

Previous owner. No idea on the shop. No idea how much filler or what it looks like underneath. Huge undertaking if the panel needs replacing

Hopefully it won’t require replacement. That’s a nasty character line to recreate with filler, too. From what I can remember, the “hips” in the quarters swell at the wheel openings, and the depth of that character line tapers directly above the wheelhouse area.

Best case scenario is good metal finishing was done, but lousy (poor mix/wrong filler type/defective can of filler/cheap quality materials) filler work caused the cracking. I keep three different types of fillers, plus two different types of icing (skim coat, for final shaping/heavy scratch & pinhole filling) for metal, pending on how thick the panel I’m repairing is, how much it needs to flex, how much filling (material depth) needs to be done, etc. And then there’s the cabinet of plastic repair material, but that’s another story.

I wish I had some advice to keep it from spreading. Right now the bigger concern is water getting into those cracks, and being trapped between (what should be) bare metal and filler. Unless someone went with the “cave and pave” repair method (just wipe filler over the dent, don’t bother to metal finish anything, and send it to paint), which would explain the filler losing adhesion.

Sorry for the long winded reply, it’s a slow afternoon in the shop, and I’m geeking out playing body shop CSI on a material failure.

ugg, no worries thank you for the comprehensive input. But now I am even more worried than I was before. Mostly cause I am afraid of finding more issues.

*Technically* you don’t need to fix it. It will be okay to leave it until you have surplus cash... especially if you live in a place where the roads don’t get salted.

If you do live somewhere that has road salt, then I say you just have to get it fixed before winter comes.

OR you can decide to NEVER fix it and let the car transition from “nice car” status to “beater” status.

I currently drive a beater and I spend exactly $0 fixing cosmetic things. I don’t even spend money on taking it to the car wash or on anything on any car cleaning supplies. I just do the necessary maintenance to keep it running and reliable

No this car will never be a beater, at least not with my plans for it
