The death wobble has been fixed. I ended up doing the following:

- New steering box

- New sway bar bushings

- New right side ball joints (left side were replaced recently)

- New stabilizer bar

- New short drag link

Things waiting to be installed:

- I scored seats from an ‘03 truck, and center console from an ‘08. Killer deals on both. They look like new too. Can’t wait to get em installed. The console has 12V ports in it too, so I need to figure out where to get power for them.

- New ‘08-’10 style telescoping tow mirrors off of eBay.

- Picked up an insulator panel from an Excursion. It fits under the glovebox. It was only $30, I figured why not see what it does for noise. Finding the matching driver’s side (goes around the pedals) has proven fruitless.

Issues left to address:

- The entire AC system needs to go as it’s all leaking. I’ll be replacing the condenser, evaporator, accumulator, and both service ports.

- I have a small fuel leak at the switch on the back of the fuel bowl.

- Most of the door seals need to get replaced.

- Headliner needs to get replaced, and I’m pretty sure there’s a lot of dirt under there. While I’m doing that I’ll probably end up stripping out the entire interior again and doing the rest of the cab insulation.

- Shocks are seeping. I’m thinking Bilsteins at all four corners. Maybe new leaf springs while I’m at it.

- I really need to get some step-up bars. The girlfriend is short.

Yeah, I’ve been spending a lot of money and time on this thing, but I’m enjoying it, and the fruits of my labor will be well worth it when it’s all done. Modern diesel trucks are crazy powerful and comfortable, but they’re so expensive and I don’t trust all the emissions systems they’re required to use.

I ran Bilsteins on my 02 F-250 powerstroke that I owned back in the 2006-2008 time frame. I liked them a lot on that truck.

Of the truck? Yeah, I did. I’ll post more soon, likely after I get the seats, console and mirror installed.

It’s a 99.5. SuperCab, Long Bed, 4x4.

Future plans will be to make it a camping/road trip/expedition rig. After the truck is done I’ll be shopping for a slide-in camper.

step up bars? You’d miss any opportunity to lift her into the seat while making rocket ship noises?

She would find that amusing exactly once.

The leak at the fuel bowl drain valve is common: O ring failure. Dieselorings.com has a kit. You can do just the rings, but the plastic valve is probably brittle.... and, you know, while it’s apart.... (“while it’s apart” is the gateway drug when it comes to 7.3s).

Do you carry a camshaft position sensor and 10mm box wrench in the glove box? You should - I took one of these trucks 260k and the only time it died under way was because of that sensor. (I had the spare with me - 10 minutes under the front end and you’re away.)

It’s a great truck. I still miss the sound and those ridiculously wide and deep seats.

Thanks - is it this one? http://www.dieselorings.com/1999-2003-ford-7-3l/fuel-bowl-parts/12-001.html

Yes, that’s the o ring kit you need.

The valve is held to the back of the fuel bowl with a couple of machine screws. It seems really easy - and would be a 2 minute job on a bench - but, as you probably know, there is a lot going on in the valley of a 7.3.

Use a dab of grease to hold the rings in the valve if they want to fall out - you don’t want them to drop off and inevitably roll to the back, under the turbo.

Warning: Broken wire strands on the on the braided high pressure oil lines can be very sharp (“hey, that looks like blood down there, I wonder where it came from!”). You’ll be working around those lines for this job.

Yep, I’m used to working in that space (I’ve installed the RiffRaff hpx and frx). Getting stuff out of the valley is certainly a pain and I’ll be taking greater steps to keep it from happening. And you’re right, I’m just going to install a new drain valve.
