My clients are getting calls about providing stroke replacements, which is a complex and touchy situation for a labor supplier. My week just got more interesting.

Company voluntarily gives significant ($1.50/hour) wage increase even though existing collectively-bargained union contract does not expire for another year. Workers want more, go on strike. Why shouldn’t the employer replace them?

Legally, no reason. Practically, you’d just inflame the situation. Don’t know about America but something like that would cause major confrontation here.

So they have a contract in place currently, but they are striking because the company wants to give them a $1 less pay raise? What’s the rest of the story? If the contract is still in place, they are likely in breach of it when the strike. Then they’re hosed if the company wants to shitcan them... this doesn’t sound right.

I know the technical challenges are vastly different, but it’s amazing how some forms of agriculture (grain) are heavily mechanized and full of skilled labor, while others (everything in California) are the opposite.
