I’ve stepped on a chipmunk before, barefoot. I think it was already dead, but it was definitely dead afterward.

I did exactly that a couple of weeks ago, top down at the end of a nice Sunday drive. Ruined it for me and it bugged me for a couple of days - although the circumstances (car next to me, car fairly close behind me) dictated that I couldn’t do anything about it without causing an accident.

This one time I had to install some fence posts. I got the post pounder from the shed and the 4 T-Posts I needed to install. Upon the first pound of the T-Post pieces of chipmunk started to fall out of the post pounder. Apparently a family of chipmunks decided a post pounder was a good location to nest. That was an aweful feeling.

In a more serious note, I feel your guilt, I stepped on a baby bird while trying to put it in its nest when I was like 13, it fell out of my hand and on the ladder and I didn’t see it when I went down to look for it again :(

Not really silly, Doc. Killing is not natural and good that you feel. If ya tried to avoid it, no big deal. god’ll help make another one.
Here, we have squirrels, armadillos (dang but they’re stupid), possums, raccoons and turtles in the road at least weekly. Most of the time I can slam on the brakes and just holler at the dumby until it figgers out which way to go, sometimes not. Never look in the rearview if you think you hit a critter. That view is what hurts. A flopping tail usually means it’s dead, btw; death throws. And for turtles, I stop and take them off the road in the direction they are traveling. Else, they’ll turn around and crawl back into traffic....

I used to ride a cycling trail near Hudson Ohio where chipmunks ran in front of us frequently. Had heard stories of them being killed by others bikes. I killed two from them going through spokes and one I ran over. Took me a while to get over the first. After the next two I figured it was a chipmunk suicide zone.
