Kinja'd!!!

Today marks the 73rd anniversary of the Normandy Landings, or D-Day. So have a Spitfire in invasion stripes.

Have a look here, under “Operation Starkey”:

(Found out by accident while trying to ascertain what was the Spitfire version - it seems it is a Mk Vb)

Even useful if you are just invading Iran:

Seriously OT: Eagle Claw ’s temp markings are fascinating... but what about Credible Sport?

Would have been pretty crazy had it could have been attempted and crazier still if they pulled it off. I’m sure the planner’s modern contemporaries are quite happy to have the Osprey at their disposal should it be needed.

I found out about Credible Sport years ago, while looking for videos of C-130s (why do I always find the most interesting things by accident?!) Later there used to be a few on YT (testing). Highly recommended.

That is exactly what I was looking for then.

Straying even further off-topic - the U-2 can also take off from carrier decks.

I’ve seen that as well, though frankly the U-2 feels like it should be able to get airborne from a standstill in a stiff breeze.

Certainly, but I imagine the reality of U-2 carrier operations was no joke...
