Kinja'd!!!

Flying is really chill! I was scared for nothing! I guess I don’t fly frequently enough to be permanently accustomed to it or remember what it’s like.

California is beautiful! The hills, trees, large bees, what a place. And the roads are all great so far!

I’m staying in Newark, hopefully I’ll get some exploring time aside from the weekend

TL;DR (Flying is alright, California is nice)

As an NJ resident this tripped warning lights. You mean Newark CA of course. But still.

During takeoff, I straight put my arms forward, one on an imaginary steering wheel and the other on an imaginary shifter. As the plane takes off, I let off the imaginary clutch and shift accordingly. Even at 31 years old lol :]

You’re safer in a plane than you are in a car.

Get up to Muir Woods (and Muir Beach) if you can. Also, down to Monterrey and Carmel if you can. So many awesome places to see not far from where you are. Yosemite is super amazing if you have lots of time to spare...

Of course. But consider this:

What are my chances of dying on my next flight? In the aviation safety field, it’s known as Q: death risk per randomly chosen flight. And here’s Barnett’s bottom line: When you get on your next jet airplane, your chance of being killed—your Q—is one in ninety million . That means you could fly every day for the next 250,000 years before you would perish in a crash. No matter how frequently you travel, your risk of death remains the same: one in ninety million . ( Source )

So yes, on average. I’ve also seen the time given as 26,000 years.

Yes, but in the event of an accident, what are your chances of dying vs. surviving compared to a car?

Really though, my wife said it best. Probabilities are all fine and well, but for you, it’s either 0% or 100%.

I used to like flying. Several ear infections later, I prefer to drive. I made the YYZ-SFO run last December, and because I’m cheap didn’t take the direct flight (right around Chrstmas=$$$). And all the runs with just one stop were either 24h+ or also super expensive. Ended up with 3 flights. My ears were not doing well afterwards...

I don’t hate flying so much as I hate airports, airport security, airline employees, every airline except Southwest’s boarding procedures, and insufficient legroom.

That’s fantastic! Now, to really experience the fun of flying, find someone to take you up in a private prop plane.

Actually, if your number came up at random, you are actually more likely to survive, unless, of course, your plane falls from the sky. Just think of the recent runway crashes where the large majority of passengers walked away, pulling their suitcases with them.

I was on a normal commercial flight where right after pilot’s usual spiel about the weather and flight time, he chuckled and added, “y’all hang on back there ... ‘cause we’re going to go faaaaaaasst.”

It’s my first time here and a 757 is probably one of the more cramped planes I’ve been on to my memory.

I’ve only been to California once, and for like a total of 5 hours. It was so eye-aching beautiful. Oh and you’ve not seen cramped until you’ve been on one of these beauties. :)

Regional jets are a tiny blast xD

I find these nicer. Sure they’re small, but I’m sure the seats are actually a little wider than in the 707/720/727/737/757.

In any case the last time I was in one it wasn’t full... got an entire row to myself :)

I need to take some flights just for shifts and giggles so I can experience different planes. I already lost my chance to ride in a trijet (unless I can find someone rich who owns a Dassault Falcon to take me on a ride).

Agreed though, the seats in the CRJ are surprisingly wide for how small the plane is. The Delta one I was on was pretty old and probably hasn’t ever seen an interior overhaul (of course Delta wouldn’t) so the seats were pretty not comfy.

Unfortunately I’ve only got this weekend to do any proper exploration. The Hornet museum and San Fran districts are Saturday, but if traveling to those sites isn’t too time consuming I’ll see if I can fit at least one of them in.

The redwoods at Muir Woods are just awe-inspiring, and the black sand of Muir Beach is really cool. Have a great time - I’m sure you’ll want to come back to Northern California sometime to see more!
