My boss is getting sick of his BMW 5 series and wants to get some ‘Merica. I suggested a Continental but he said he doesn’t want something that low and does want something that is easier to get into and out of. He said he was thinking about a Jeep Cheorkee and that they were the ‘original SUV’ (lets not debate how wrong he is) and that he had one a long time ago and always liked it. I’m thinking its not the same and it isn’t going to have the luxury that the BMW has. I think he would want something AWD as we get some brutal storms here and will still need to get to the office.

Your boss probably meant a GC

Why not a grand cherokee? Opulence, it has it and it should frequent the dealer about as often as his 5 series so he wont feel like a fish out of water.

I can understand the want to get something easier to get in and out of, though I’m not sure why he’s willing to downgrade from a German luxury car to a middle-of-the-road Jeep. He’ll probably end up learning this is a bad choice the hard way. :/

Here are some Cherokee rivals that do Cherokee things much better though:

Mazda CX-5, Volkswagen Tiguan, Subaru Forester, Land Rover Discovery Sport - and if he’s willing to stretch a bit: BMW X3 and Volvo XC60.

I like your boss. I’d get the TrailHawk though.

... the XJ instead featured a light-weight unibody design, [3] The models were originally marketed as Sportwagons and became the precursor to the modern sport utility vehicle (SUV) as that term was not yet in use. [4] [5]

The XJ spawned competitors as other automakers began to notice that this Jeep design began replacing regular cars. [6] It also began to supplant the role of the station wagon and “transformed from truck to limousine in the eyes of countless suburban owners.” [7] The XJ is a “significant link in the evolution of the 4x4.

What sort of budget? Any specific tastes? I have a general idea of what I’d be getting but I’m also the guy who vigorously defends the Gen1 Colorado and who would rather have an ‘88 Chevy Beauville or late 80's diesel Jetta than a 458, so there’s that...

he said he wanted American so I dont think he’d look at any of those.

But yeah, if he wants American there’s not a whole load of options.

You have your meh GM SUVs, the Cherokee (which is based on an Alfa Giulietta) and the Escape (which is designed by Ford of Europe). The car industry is more of a global thing these days, it’s all about the branding and advertising which makes them seem American. After all, the most American-made car is the Camry. :/

*Unless he meant the Grand Cherokee, which is still a downgrade but makes a tiny bit more sense I guess.

he hates having the car int he shop so something that would be reliable, he said American, hes older so something easy to get in, and a decent level of luxury. I didn’t really want to ask budget, but i’m thinking something in the area of a 5 series or less since that is what he has.

Actually, if the continental is similar to the ford 500 or new Taurus, the seating position is relatively high compared to most sedans. But the Cherokee, I don’t know about that one. Grand Cherokee maybe, but I wouldn’t think a Cherokee will suit an ex 5 series driver. Maybe the caddy srx? I’m not a fan personally, but might fit the bill. Chevy Tahoe too, that’s not a bad place to be for racking up some miles.

If he’s interested in light offroading, I’d stick with Jeep--though I’d go to a GC for preference. If not... I’d tell him to take a long, hard look at an Acadia Denali. Reading between the lines I’d say the second option is a better fit.

Higher trim levels of the Grand Cherokee seem pretty nice. They can be pretty handsome to look at and come quite nicely equipped…so if moving from a BMW that probably wouldn’t be too much of a step down.

Assuming he doesn’t want something huge like an Escalade that might be a pretty sweet option. I know nothing about GMCs etc…wife’s family has always had GCs and they’ve loved them. I’m not a huge fan and the fit and finish leaves a bit to be desired…but newer gen does look much better. Her parents recently downsized to an Escape Titanium which they’re absolutely loving. Much better fuel economy and the tech is great for what it is too. Just wouldn’t expect much off-road capability, and is obviously smaller.

Transmission gripes aside, the Cherokee is a good place to be. That 9-speed auto is kinda schizophrenic though.

Coming from a 5-series though, he may be better served with a Grand Cherokee.

Tell him if he wants something that’s reliable then unfortunately Jeeps aren’t the way to go, especially the Fiat-based ones like the Cherokee.

Luxury (or sorta-luxury) small to medium American crossovers:

Buick Envision
Cadillac XT5
GMC Terrain (Denali)
GMC Acadia (Denali)
Lincoln MKC
Lincoln MKX

Otherwise if he doesn’t care about a premium brand and does care about horsepower, the up-level engines on the Ford Escape and Edge are pretty quick.

An outback, despite being a Japanese brand, is a great car as far as being able to get in and out of, and it’s got great safety features and is built in America. My grandpa looked at everything from a grand Cherokee, to an enclave to a gls and Range Rover and a Touareg, and in the end went with an outback
