Kinja'd!!!

We’ve all heard it before. I’m done. Stop whinging about sport mode.

Why does a Ferrari need a sport mode? Why isn’t it always in sport?

Because it’s not a race car. It’s a road car

Because roads are shitty some of the time

Because getting to good roads often means traveling on shit roads

Because sometimes good roads are shit roads. They’re quiet, dis-used, damp, off-camber, with a rocky surface and with debris

Because it’s an expensive car and the owner wants to enjoy it more of the time

Because it’s a glorious car and the owner wants to use it as much as they can

Because we have the technology to make a car both stiff and compliant, both comfortable and responsive, so why shouldn’t we

Because the easier the car is to live with, the happier the owner is, the more they like the car, the more they like the manufacturer, the happier the manufacturer is

Because, those who can afford fast cars are not always (or usually) the young and able

Because all the things that make a car better to drive (in no particular order & non-exhasutive: noise, feel, responsiveness, power, danger) don’t make it better in every situation in which you use the car

Am I wrong, Oppo?

I still think most of those sport modes are placebo buttons :p

This does not apply to snow/winter modes though, since those actually do something to help with snow/ice traction

You forgot one other reason: no one sitting in stop-and-go traffic wants or needs aggressive acceleration.

No, if you don’t want to drive a car with no sound deadening, 1" of ground clearance, a 140 dB exhaust note (at idle) that rides like a jackhammer, you shouldn’t drive a sports car.

Yes! I didn’t even mention traffic! What you need/want in traffic are entirely different to sporty driving. But Ferraris see traffic just like any other road car.

I’ve never actually used one, aside from the PWR/ECON button in my mum’s Commodore which just holds gears longer in the auto.

You could be right. But I think the logic is sound.

And yes certainly.

I always press the Sport button when I start my car. Throttle response is much sharper, and I love hearing the exhaust burble with the flaps open.

But pressing Sport automatically sets PASM to sport, which is intolerably stiff on %95 of roads. So after pushing the Sport button I usually set PASM to normal.

On those few %5 of smooth roads though (which are usually the windy type), I set PASM to sport for full attack mode and body roll goes from minimal to completely absent. I love it.

I still think it should be the other way around, like Doug said. Leave the car always in sport mode and if you want comfort mode then you need to press the button.

From experience with my XJ8, I can tell you that, at least in those, sport mode forces the car to start in first, revs higher before upshifting, and kicks down with less pedal pressure.

All of your reasons would mean something if the Sport mode button actually did something.

It is and always has been a gimmick to make autotragic cars hold gears a bit longer and make their DBW throttle extra touchy.

Maybe in exotics and more techy cars they firm up the shocks and turn on active aero bits, or allow the engine to reach higher RPM or allow more boost. Then I guess yeah your reasons make sense.

Nope. You’re right. Even in my 3 ton bus there are times when I want the suspension and throttle in normal/comfort, and times when I want it in sport.

I usually prefer sport mode... tightens up the throttle response, quicker shifts, holds gears, etc. I have never owned a vehicle with it, but rented a fair number. The best “sport” mode I’ve experienced oddly enough was on an Isuzu Trooper - much nicer to drive with it on than off.

In my Abarth it made the steering noticeably heavier and increased boost pressures. Same in my dads M235i. On my wife’s X1 it increases boost, wrings out shifts and keeps it out of eighth gear.

Most sport mode buttons on standard cars (I.E. not ferraris) don’t do anything. On my car (Mazda6) it does make the transmission shift completely differently. It holds gears a lot longer if I let it shift and if I have it in manual mode, the engine throttle response is a lot more aggressive.

Admittedly, I never use it, though.

I’m sure I’ve seen it on reviews for Ferraris. Doug’s done some McLaren reviews that mentioned it. These are cars where the sport mode makes radical changes!

But even on a lesser car where all they do is make the pedal touchy. It makes the car feel good for rev-heads and the elderly alike, so where’s the problem?

Kinja'd!!! "Nauraushaun" (nauraushaun12)

I think it should be up to the owner. If the car resets to comfort mode every time you start it, that’s a shame. But if the owner wants to leave it in sport, or comfort, or race 90% of the time, that’s their choice. These cars are bought for all kinds of reasons by all kinds of people

It was actually three years from concept from production. Jalopnik likes to inflate that number to make it seem more dramatic.

The car that preceded the 2012 concept was the HSV-010 GT. Front-engined RWD V8. Completely different.

Yeah, that’s true. Some vehicles lend themselves to more to the dual personalities that a true sports mode would provide. I can’t believe the difference between the two modes on my car. Definitely nice to have the option. I’m reminded of driving an auto previous generation CTS-V. That car was so docile at around town speeds that you wouldn’t know what kind of power it has until you stomp on the gas. But even then, it was composed and fun to drive. I guess when you have 500+hp on tap you don’t have to go crazy with the shift adjustments. When driving in traffic and the like, it’s nice to have a more docile pedal response, even in a Ferrari. Otherwise you end up looking like a douche driving down the city streets stoplight to stoplight with the car bucking and crackling the exhaust. No need for that in normal traffic... save that type of behavior for the SRT charger and challenger, non-hellcat drivers.... never fails, when I see, or more frequently, hear a car zipping up through traffic, it ends up being some tool in a 392 charger.... I get it, you have a fast car, but you have a chip on your shoulder cause you couldn’t afford the hellcat. Whereas hellcat drivers just lope along barely getting into the boost and making the supercharger whine. Unless provoked, of course.

I think it’s a pretty clear sign though. Usually companies will present a design study that could be an NSX or whatever without explicitly telling you. They dance around the true intent of the concept to avoid writing cheques they can’t cash. Like the Supra FT-HS and FT-1 concepts from Toyota.

In this case they told us it previewed the upcoming NSX. That’s as good as a promise given how coy they are.

But that’s all heresay
