Kinja'd!!!

This thing has stayed at the minimum bid for two days. It’s old, it’s rotary, and it’s rebuilt. A cream puff, right?

If it’s like anything I every try to buy on Ebay it will stay at the lowest possible price until an hour before the auction ends, then sky rocket past my maximum.

Happens every time. Took me 30 minutes into my first auction to learn to never bid until just before closing.

But he posted pics of the compression numbers. That’s as good as a warranty right there, right?

The automatic really ruins it. That engine is has no torque to begin with, add automatic and a 1992 geo is going to take you at a light.

If it was manual maybe. But 3500 for an auto. Nah skip that.

I think OP knows this, his avatar explains the reason why that doesn’t really matter.

I have a lot of good memories of getting to frequently borrow my boss’s ‘86 and wouldn’t mind finding one of these for myself. But automatic? Pass...

I don’t really have a choice. But still, I drove my mom’s ‘88 when I was in high school, and I can testify that it isn’t at all gutless.

I understand your sentiment, but I’m an obligate auto user.

I understand, but I have no choice in that. I know for a fact that the auto is pretty fun though.

Buy it and later V8 swap it after the rotary dies to have a sporty automatic convertible with torque for days to offset the automatic and the additional weight.

Awesome. Everyone talks about engine swaps, and I wish so that I could participate in one just because it’d be fun to get under the hood. My dad’s first car was, I think, a ‘47 Nash that he bought for $50 and then bought another engine from a yard to swap in. I’d love to have a story like that to tell someday. Alas, so many things make that unlikely to ever happen.

Throw money at a reputable Mazda-centric shop to do the work for you if you can’t find the time or place to do it yourself. There’s a local shop near me in SC that’s done several V8-swapped FC and FD RX7s including one that was Mustang-powered (can’t remember if it was a 90s 5.0 or 4.6L) with the IRS diff pulled from a SVT Cobra. Granted, it’s going to cost a pretty penny to get good work done right the first time.

I can fully understand that some people don’t have a choice but to drive an automatic; my mother destroyed her knee in a skiing accident and had to get rid of her beloved 3-series since she could no longer drive it (I got a great deal...) That didn’t stop her from putting her license at risk, getting multiple speeding tickets in a VW Vanagon, of all things. Things got worse when she got her W210, resulting in a warning letter from the DMV. I got the same letter at about the same time; I was in my thirties with a couple of modified BMWs, so my speed wasn’t much of a surprise, but a grandmother getting multiple speeding tickets?

Since I’m lucky enough to have the option I’ll stick with manuals even in my minivan and 525i, two places you wouldn’t expect to find them. But when you don’t have a choice of transmission, make the choice to have fun - that’s the important part.

Alternatively, get a bunch of RX7/LS-swap/Oppo guys together for weekends with the promise of free beer and food. I’m sure with enough hot dogs and alcohol, a swap can still be possible on a more affordable budget as long as you prepare everything ahead of time.

It’s the pretty penny part that would stop me. That and the whole point of such an engine swap for me would be to experience the process.

As cool as it would be to have a kiss-ass and reliable engine in a classic chassis like the RX-7, the objective of my search right now is for a cheap beater convertible for sunny days. I posted this one half as a joke because a rebuilt (not reman or crate) rotary engine sounds like a time bomb to me.

That said, I do have a really good place near me called Rotary Performance should I ever want to buy another rotary and get it either serviced or replaced.

Now there’s an idea! Must calculate how much alcohol will be enough to keep them working while still not botching the job.

Not for long (at least in the US). You can’t get a manual 5-series anymore, and Mazda discontinued the manual in the Mazda5 after just a few years before discontinuing the car entirely. I’m keeping these forever.

I like it! Looks sharp, and I *think* it will sell for less than the Jags you’ve been looking at, right? If so, then you have some $ to make repairs if needed, if anything breaks after the PPI.

I don’t know what these go for though - or what they’re like to drive. But must be a lot slower than the Jag- although a lot lighter and more tossable, I’d think.

I still remember my mom’s ‘86. They’re a treat to drive. It’s a different idea from the Jag. That was supposed to satisfy my wants for a luxury daily driver and top down fun at the same time. Looks like that will be much harder to find than I thought. So now I’m looking at a new sedan for a DD and considering a beater soft top for fun. This qualifies and wouldn’t take that many miles. Still, a rebuilt rotary is a risk not for the faint of heart.

I hear you on the rebuilt Dorito. But maybe if you can get it fairly cheap, you can fix it if needed (not that it would be money well spent...)

Would really be helpful to see exactly what was done and whether a reputable shop did it, though—

Just had a convo with the folks from Rotary Performance nearby. Their feeling is what mine was. It’s awful risky to buy a well used rotary rebuilt by who knows over the internet without getting it to a mechanic first.

8 hours left on the auction though, and no increase in bid. That’ll happen in the last half hour.
