Kinja'd!!!

My first guess is the wrong way 85% of the time. How is that even possible?

Well you always get it wrong the first try, turn it the other way and nope still wrong, back the way you first tried unsuccessfully and THEN it plugs in fine!

Confirmation bias. You don’t remember all the times you picked correctly or attach less importance or emotional weight to them while simultaneously over valuing or remembering all the times you got it wrong.

The worst is when it takes more than 2 attempts to get it right.

The easier explanation is that I’m just an idiot. Or that the IT gods hate me. But yours works too.

Well, the USB icon on the connector is the best way to determine how to plug it in, until you get to some stupid Dell designed by a worthless, lazy engineer that thought installing the front panel USB ports upside down wasn’t a big deal.

Yes, the USB type A connector is a seriously stupid design, and I can’t wait until it goes away. Even though I don’t have a single device or computer that uses the type C connector, I want to see that everywhere on everything.

It’s really easy actually - MOST USB ports are installed a certain way. If you pick up the USB cable, there is almost always a ‘seam’ on one side of the plug (the bottom). With the way most USB ports are installed, that seam should almost always face downward, so pick up your USB thing, flip the seam side downwards and it should almost always be right.

I’ve been following this rule for years...almost always works!

Except that most of my computers have the ports sideways. I’m not saying you’re wrong, just that I usually find a way to defeat logic.

I thought you were referring to laptops! The ports on the back of desktops are sideways, yes, but the front or top ports are usually mounted ‘normally’.

It isn’t. Human perception is biased. You are more aware of when it doesn’t insert the first time and will ignore most cases where it went in the first try.

If the cables are new, over the long term you should see success about 50% of the time. If you glance at the plug and know the orientation of the connector, you may approach a 95% or higher success rate. If the cables are old, they should develop a bend that helps you with orientation - I never miss these and never really think about them.

Also, as mentioned, there are some standards to the orientation of these plugs. So much so that a standard USB thumb drive will have the front side ending up pointing up, to the front (when on a monitor), or to the left. Even the printing on the face of almost all USB thumb drives and printing on plugs reflects this. Orient the text so it is right-side-up (or under your thumb if you’re right-handed) and it’ll connect more than 90% of the time...

Even worse are the micro USB plugs. Here we see one of these hateful beasts magnified 1000x and you can finally tell which way is up.

Kinja'd!!!

Here we see one at only 10x, and up and down are nearly indistinguishable. For advanced difficulty we shall attempt to plug one into a flat black controller while in a dimly lit room.

According to the USB standard, the “trident” USB symbol on the connector should face upwards (or forward in a vertical slot). The same is true with the mini and micro USB connectors.

That being said, some manufacturers violate the standard and install their ports upside down, but thankfully that is a rarity.

These are what they use in hell. The shape is just close enough that you try to force it to make sure, thereby breaking the jack.
