Kinja'd!!!

And I don’t like flying. I don’t like take-offs. Once I’m in the air, I’m fine (aside from not being able to sleep), but the rush of take-offs is anxiety inducing to me. It’s like a fast upwards rollercoaster, which I also dislike. What to do? Does anyone else share this feeling?

Take off is the best part. It’s every other part of flying I hate. Anti anxiety pills would be the only thing that come to mind, but it’s a little short notice to get those.

My favorite part is the take off and landing my worst part is the middle. I would recommend bringing something to do to distract you. I would also try to remember that your emotions as strong as they might be will eventually pass. I like meditating too which could help.

I’d suggest finding a way to distract yourself, preferably with something you enjoy. Read, or talk to the person next to you, listen to music, it just close your eye and daydream about something you love.

I admit that I occasionally have a drink or two, but that’s not really a great solution - although it can work. Have a great trip!

Just keep in mind that take-off is the easy, safe part- getting up in the air has rarely ever killed anyone. The landing part, however...

Faced with a 13 hour flight to Japan, my doc wrote me a prescription for Ambien - can’t sleep on planes, but I clearly had to. Worked - got 6 hours each way. I hate sleeping pills, but these work fast.

I mostly hate landings. Only had one “good” landing on a Southwest flight to Chicago.

Do antihistamines make you sleepy? Might take a Dramamine along to help you zone out.

Does it require a prescription? I’m not sure I’ve ever had an antihistamine before.

I’ve a Dale Carnegie book I have to read on the flight and my music so I’ve got distractions for once.

This is a 6 hour flight, second shortest flight I’ve done (MI->FL is shortest). The closest thing to sleeping pills I’ve used is melatonin.

I get anxiety when flying but it’s not related to actually flying which I enjoy it’s related to traveling in general.

I like a window seat and zone out on the landscape below. Mostly my anxiety makes me want to pee all the time. So I pee just before getting on the plane then again after beverage service, then I’m fine.

That’s perfect. Music is my personal favorite—

It’s an over the counter antihistamine compound marketed to reduce nausea from travel sickness, but it has the side of effect of making people drowsy. My mom used to give me Benadryl as a little kid to cause the same effect. A minority of people, however, are not affected that way and may actually feel more awake. That’s why I asked if you had had antihistamine before, because then you would know which you are.

A non drug or alcohol alternative is to just have a really good book or music to distract you. Nowadays they let you have your phone on during takeoff.

I guess I’m gonna pull an all-nighter and see if I can pass out before takeoff.

Weird, take off is the only part of the flight I enjoy. Being pushed back in the seat for a few seconds is the only time the seat is remotely comfortable.

I dealt with it by drinking so much the night before I was too tired to stay awake. Fell asleep on the taxiway and slept through the whole flight. Woke up after we landed.

I used to not like take off’s, (specifically the slight wallowing right after the moment of take off.) But I convinced myself it’s like a drag race - now I love it when the pilot hammers it. Landings - eh.. still not my favorite.

The acceleration at take-off is fantastic. It is like a powerful car in 1st gear-- only 1st gear is good for a couple hundred miles per hour!
