...according to this story and the Census Bureau. I didn’t like Portland the one time I visited there. Lots of White folk trying unconvincingly to look like hippies. The real hippies live in Humboldt County...

Oregon pays pensions to its teachers equal to 100% of their salaries. And collects few taxes. It’s a weird state and I had no idea about the racism in its origins.

I never liked Oregon. Hate the weather. Hate the speed limits. Hate the faux hippies.

Funny thing about where I live on South Beach. It is mainly French, Italian, Russian, Serbian, US citizens, and Eastern Europeans. There aren’t many Latin or Haitian people here compared to the number of Europeans. Mainly the French, but at least the surrender monkeys can take a joke and will have a witty come back.

Can confirm, Humboldt is the Mecca of hippies.

Trust me there are no shortage of real hippies in Eugene. People of color? Yes, there is a shortage. But definitely not hippies.

Can’t speak for Portland.

Not just racism. Even to this day it’s still a haven for every kind of cult you could imagine.

Beautiful state though! Tons of ghost towns to explore, natural hotsprings, one-of-a-kind locations like Crater Lake and the painted hills... Great place for a road trip

Totally false. Gawker/Gizmedia has taught me racists and racism only exists in the south

My sentiments exactly... Unfortunately, I reside there.

In other news, I almost took the Max rail for the first time that night, but decided to drive instead. I think I’ll stick with driving for the foreseeable future.

The hippie mecca has incredibly racist roots and a lack of diversity... Another reason to hate hippies.

I know a guy who moved there. Small sample size, I’ll grant you, but he’s a vocal guy who tends to know what he’s talking about -- and believes everything he thinks — and I listened to him rant for ten years. Oregon sounds like a positively dreadful place to live. Nice state parks, though.

I saw a clip on television once where the Instutute of French Cultural Purity, or whatever it’s called, had a guy on talking about the bad influence the U.S. had on ruining French cultural purity. And he was smoking a cigarette. And the pack was on his otherwise entirely empty desk. And it was a pack of Marlboros.

My wife and I had our first conversation that seemed to end in the sentiment for both of us that we should move back to MN. We’ve been here for about 8 years and honestly, the first 5 years we just traveled the PNW, mostly camping at least once a month, and drinking good beer; and we loved living here. Then we both finished school and had a daughter and Minnesota makes way more sense. Now to just actually find a way to make it happen.

What part of MN? I grew up in SW MN, and honestly- I wouldn’t move back. Between the mosquitoes, the harsh, frigid winters, the road salt and the sweltering summers, I’ll pass. I lived on the Florida panhandle for 8 years and miss it dearly, though.

Okay, it has legal weed, scads of free shit for those who willingly choose to be homeless, corrupt public officials elected by said hippies, incredibly racist roots and a lack of diversity both in thought and in culture. Oh, and crumbling infrastructure/complete indifference towards the impending largest natural disaster in human history.

Originally from NW part of the twin cities, we will see where things take us. I went to college in La Crosse, WI and liked that corner of the state, and love Duluth. If we are within a few hours drive of family, that would be nice.

But what you’re forgetting is that mosquitos are there due to amazing lakes, and frigid winters means good cross country skiing and outdoor ice skating.

The salt makes me sad for my cars though...

I lived in Minneapolis for 3 years before moving to Florida. My wife’s family owns a house in the Wisconsin Dells- I love WI, too!

Oh, I agree it’s beautiful. I still love it and I visit at least once a year. I can’t wait to take my kids walleye fishing and teach them all about farming and show them the amazing life I got to live growing up. I just don’t want to deal with it 365 days a year.

Still far enough away for now (though 3,000 miles would be better)... My next move will be to multiple acres away from town.
