Shocking.

What’s the restriction size up to these days? When we were there the best anyone could do was ~88 hp.

Edit: Dammit they allow the electric cars to have more power than the gas?!? Bullshit!

You can get a bit more out of the restrictor (okay, out of the gas restrictor, ethanol is a bit tougher), but it requires REALLY optimized design. A few cars at Michigan have been 90+, but you usually are giving up something elsewhere to get it.

And yes, all the ICE powertrain folks should be jealous that the electrics get so much power now.

Electric cars are restricted to 80kw, unlimited torque.

C-cars are limited by capacity, not given a specific max power. 710 cc’s.

C cars don’t compete directly against electric

Combustion cars have intake restrictors to limit power by restricting the maximum mass airflow, thus limiting maximum potential power. Even if you get your pressure recovery optimized, get GREAT BSFC, and assume away friction, you won’t get more than 103hp worth of air through the restrictor. That’s stoichiometry and physics.

(If I was judging powertrain and you gave that capacity answer, I’d knock your score.) Used to be 610cc, now 710cc. In both cases, teams rarely get back to stock power levels with the restrictors unless they are 1) well below the displacement limit or 2) running something slow-revving/low-output like a Briggs or a big single.

I know they don’t compete directly against electrics. (And am glad for it, b/c, even apart from safety concerns, the electrics are getting pretty fast...) I have worked the events for a decade, was a team leader and participant before that.

I didn’t realize I was talking to a design judge, I would’ve put more effort into my response :P

I’m not, I just drink beers w all of em and give em hell for their decisions. :)
