Kinja'd!!!

That hole wasn’t there yesterday. I poked at the spot and went through. I was going to wash any salt off of the rocker panels and put chassis saver on them just to keep it from getting worse.

Fuck Michigan, fuck road salt, fuck rust, and fuck my luck. Rock Auto sells them, but I have no experience, I have no idea what I’d be doing, I don’t have the money to have it done, nobody to teach me how to weld, I’m probably shit out of luck.

Even if I wanted to just wash my hands of the truck (Which I don’t - I’m attached to it), I wouldn’t get jack shit for it. I see potential for awesome, everyone else sees a shitty rusted pile with 267k on it. I’d probably get $1200 on the best day, which is STILL less than I paid for it and I’ve put another $800 in it. I’d have to give it away or scrap it (which I sure as fuck won’t do), and THEN I’d still have to find something that ticks the right boxes that doesn’t cost a fortune.

I’m not really looking for advice, I just needed to vent.

there would have to be plenty of videos on youtube that would help with the welding

I mean, true, but still. I’ll probably say screw it and leave it or I’ll fix it. Like I said, I just needed to vent a little bit.

Yeah, I’m watching my truck start to rust away, and it burns my ass so badly. I’m sentimentally attached to it, but not so much that I’ll start pouring money into the bottomless hole that is rust repair. Just gotta let it go, and drive it as long as you can.

I’ll repair most body rot, but the second this thing gets a hole in the frame I’m done.

Be careful not to fall into the “I have $5000 sunk into a $1000 vehicle” trap. It’s a painful one. Been there, done that. Done let sentiment get the best of your wallet.

I feel your pain, I’ve got my 1999 Dakota that I check every oil change for new rot. It’s realativly clean, but last time I saw a spot on one of the doors. Gives me the sads, but I’ll treat it for now and try to keep it from spreading until I can get the motivation to try a repair. I can weld a little bit, but not great. But gotta start somewhere. I was fortunate to score a great Miller mig setup from eBay many moons ago, and I’ve done exhaust pipes, but no body panels. I agree with your fuck salt attitude, except for when I’m coming home and the roads are shitty, then I love me some salt trucks. ;). Michigan life I guess. Good luck. I have access to a shop in Troy and I have my welder setup over there. I do some volunteer work, so if you get the motivation to do a repair, hit me up.

I’ll keep that in mind! I thought the 90s Fords rusted bad, but they don’t have shit on some of the Dakotas I’ve seen.

You should see the 2000-2003 Tauruss and sables we have that were donated. Two of the three are rusted out the entire passenger side rockers. And the drivers sides aren’t too far behind. Less than 60k on one of them. Crappy plastic trim piece in the rockers looks to be the cause. Sad really. Now we have two parts cars.
