I know only a little bit about tires, and my TSX needs new ones badly.

Kinja'd!!!

Tire size is 215/50R17. I want:

decent brand and quality, nothing too cheap

around $100 or less. unless it’s buy 3 get 1 free, then it can go to $125/tire

I’d like a performance all-season, but it still has to be good in snow/rain.

After a quick search on Tire Rack shows that the BFGoodrich g-force COMP-2 A/S seems like a pretty good tire for the price (plus I think that’s whats on the car now).

Like I said, I don’t know what tires are good or not, so any thoughts or help would be appreciated.

BFG Sport Comp 2s, both the A/S and the summer performance tire, are kickass. Fun amounts of dry grip and wonderful rain behavior. The summer variant is a bit noisy but I think the A/S should be less of an earful.

I’ve had good experience with Kumho tires. They perform well for being so inexpensive.

All-season tires are inherently a compromise. There is truly no such thing as performance all season tires. Getting more performance means losing season-ing; since you’re around Chicago you can either get something more sport oriented and take public transport on really bad days, or get a true all season tire and lose a little fun when it’s warm.

Personally I’d try and find a really cheap set of wheels that fit your TSX and have dedicated winter tires on then. Save your stock wheels for summer tires. But that only works if you have a place to stack a set of wheels for 8 months and also a place to park the car to change them. Even with a cheap quick jack you can swap wheels in less than an hour.

I concur with this. I’m also in Chicagoland, and knowing from experience that having “all-seasons” in the winter here really hinders traction. Once temps drop below 45, especially below 40, which let’s face it, is like half of the year, the tires become hard as a rock and there’s hardly any grip left for emergencies.

If you’re going with TireRack tires, I’d recommend the General Altimax RT43 ($100) or the BFGoodrich G-Force ($92). If you live in a place where the weather is more sun and dry than wet and snow, they have a close out on Goodyear RSAs for only $70, but they’re not the great in the wet.

i’d say Kumho, but i have no idea how they’d go in snow

I’ve put General Altimax RT-43's on three separate vehicles now. They’re a great all around tire for a very reasonable price. I would’ve put them on my truck, if they came in the right size. MontegoMan put them on his Milan, and said the thing plowed through like 7" of snow without a problem.

RSAs are no bueno. Had them on my Dakota as Oem tire. Not fun in anything other than warm dry pavement.

Conti DWS? Probably a bit out of your budget, but a really good all around tire. Ran a set on my CTSV back in the day. The tires were nice. Pilot sports AS are a great tire, but probably out of budget, but that’s one of the only tires I would run year round. Those and the Contis. Don’t cheap out on tires, that’s all you have between you and the road. Bad tires make Driving not so much fun.

Best feel and grip I ever had was a set of Yokohamas, something like these (on a ‘97 SHO). https://www.yokohamatire.com/tires/avid-envigor-zps

I have Continental ContiPro Contacts on my 08 TSX. This is my first season with the tires, they’re pretty decent. The rain grip is above average, and the dry grip does inspire some spirited driving at times. But I also have a set of Blizzaks for the New England winter, so I can’t comment on snow performance.

Whatever you do, don’t get Toyo tires. I have them on my GTO (It’s a good weather only car, and I was in a situation where I didn’t have much choice, but still) and if someone sneezes too hard on dry pavement, they lose traction. Not even that great dry, and they flat spot easily if it sits for a bit. I’ve had to balance them 4 times since buying them two years ago.

The General Altimax are good if you’re not looking for performance. I have them on my Integra, they’re good, but leave a lot to be desired.

I’ve also has the summer version of the BFGs you mentioned. They are excellent! Can’t recommend then enough, but Idk how their A/S are.

Toyo has a few really good tires, but the ones I’m thinking of are closer to 200 dollars per tire.

What model do you have?

I put 4 Kumho ecsta hs51's on my Abarth (when I still had it) and they were great, wet, dry, braking, noise etc. I’ll be sticking them on my Leon when the dreadful Bridgestone potenza’s it has on (from the factory) are done, god they are awful!

My wife had a set of Cooper Zeon RS3-A all-seasons on her G35 coupe. Not a bad tire at all. Pep boys has them for $85 each in your size with a $50 rebate on a set.

Wtf would the OEM put those tires on a truck?? That’s nuts; yeah the RSA tires are terrible in anything other than warm, but they’re still slightly better than dedicated summer tires. 100 million police cars can’t be wrong ;)

J/k, police cars used to come with them because of the deal that Goodyear cut Ford for the tires.

I suggest you check out the Nokian WRG3 tire. It’s a premium 4 season tire I’ve had good experiences with.

Or for a similar tire at a lower price, the Nordman WR, which is almost as good- basically it’s the previous gen version of nokian wrg3... also a good tire, but cheaper since it’s an older design.

And in winter driving, I find these 4 season Nokians to be better than cheap winter tires, but not as good as high end winter tires

yeah I won’t have a place to store them, otherwise that’d be a good idea. i’d go for less fun but more traction is snow/wet.

The BFG Comp-2 A/S is a solid performance all-season tire that actually works in the winter. I got a set of them for my wife’s Impreza and we’ve been very happy with them.

The Continental DWS 06 and General G-Max AS-03 offer a little more winter ability in exchange for less sportiness. The DWS 06 has more winter ability and a softer/quieter ride. General is Continental’s cheaper US-based brand, just like BFGoodrich is Michelin’s cheaper US-based brand.

The G-Max AS-05 is replacing the G-Max AS-03. The new version, if it maintains or improves the winter ability along with improving the sportiness, could be a good choice. But it hasn’t been tested yet so it’s an unknown.

Hard to believe they don’t make a sporting tire of any sort that fits, but then again I bought mine back in ‘00.
