Hankook dynapro AT/M in the stock 265/65r17. A good price... Not a great price. Notice something missing in the second pic? Yeah they broke a stud. “Happens all the time”. Funny you say that because I’ve only ever had one other broken stud in my life and it’s happened here. Also that time you stripped a nut somehow. “We use the impact wrench to get them on and then hand tighten to spec”. It’s something you shouldn’t tell a person when their car is eye level in the bay next to the windows into the shop cause they are likely to see if you’re right it not (not).

One more trip to the shop...

Story the 2nd. So one of the guys in the shop knew my dad really well in a professional/mechanic sense and spoke highly of him all the time. He knows me as his son and treats me family great when we come in. I sorta knew this but never really knew why. Today he told me about how he met my dad though a mutual friend, and my dad kept following this guy around as he moved from shop to shop. I guess he lost a store he owned, got divorced and hit the bottle hard. He told me that his friends abandoned him but my dad stuck around, helped him through it and gave him some great advice. Its not like they were friends either, just some mechanic friend of a friend deal. I had no idea. My dad told us jack squat about his life outside the home so hearing stories like this at his funeral was eye opening. Long story short is to always take the initiative to help a person out I suppose. Very eye opening to hear it.

Is the paint on that wheel coming off, too (not that the shop would’ve caused that)? That sucks they broke a stud. I’ve yet to have that happen.

Why would the send it out like that without fixing it?

Exactly. They kept saying it was spinning but I have it and it’s clearly sheared from excessive clamping force

I use an impact wrench to put the nuts on sometimes, but my finger’s off the trigger usually before I hear so much as the first pop... and it’s with a wrench with very limited ugga-duggas. Just a nut-spinner and nut remover, never rattled on. If I were using a 3/4 drive and rolling until I was rattling away, it would be a different story.

That’s not a bad looking tire. How does it hold up to something like a KO2?

Maybe find another shop to work on your truck?

supposedly really well. They are supposed to last a long time, and they have the mountain snowflake for winter traction and I’ve seen them work really well off road too.

they had the best deals on these tires. I knew I was taking my chances but I still got the best deal even after they fix their mistake.

As someone that used to work at America’s Tire and goes back to get employee pricing I have seen and still see stupid and scary shit, so my car never actually goes into the shop, the wheels go in loose. I’d rather spend more time and effort in order to avoid them fucking up my car.

But don’t think that means shit doesn’t happen, because they still manage to scratch my wheels and that’s fun to deal with.

Tires look nice! I’d be interested to hear how they perform in icy/snowy conditions.

I do my own tire rotations so studs don’t “break all the time” but I carry an extra front and rear stud or two plus a few spare lug nuts. This way when they accidentally pop one, I can hand over the OEM part and the bill for it too. IIRC, they’re pretty affordable. $3 or 4 a stud, $6 for the nut.

That’s a cool story. Always great to hear positive things about how your family helped someone out!

I’ve had a set of my old (now my parent’s) escalade for five or six years now. They’ve fairly held up well for the 25 or 30k they’ve been on the truck, and have done what I asked them to do. They were really cheap at the time, which did color my expectations of them, but I’ve liked them.

I hated the Dynapro A/T on my F150, but in fairness, it’s an I-beam truck and hates all tires. They were fairly new when I got the truck and were noisy and created a horrendous pull. The first thing I did to the truck was check the alignment and just rotating the tires fixed the pull. I generally like Kumhos as a decent value tire, but that’s car tires and these were my only experience with their truck line. I certainly didn’t buy another set. If you are unhappy with these for whatever reason, check out the Toyo Open Country A/T, I’ve had them on two trucks (one a 4runner, the other my Ford) and like them. They stay round, as I like to say. That said, I hope you have better luck than I did. You certainly have a better truck for them.

Cool story about your dad and the mechanic, amazing what a little help can mean.
