Kinja'd!!!

The name Citroen comes from Andre Citroen. His last name comes from his father, who was Dutch. So, therefore, the Dutch pronunciation (/sitrun/) is more correct than the French pronunciation ([si.t.n]). Citroen isn’t even a word in French.

Apparently citroen is Dutch for lemon, so that’s a great name for a car company. I still want a Cactus.

Intriguingly, it all goes back to the late Corporal Bonaparte. When he rose to higher and imperial things he annexed the Netherlands and by way of the Code Napoleon required persons not already possessed of a surname to acquire one. Andre’s great grandfather Roelof was a fruit merchant and at his customers’ suggestion added Limoenman. Roelof’s son decided to Frenchify himself and progressed through Limoenman-Citron to Citroen. Andre, when at school in Paris, decided he didn’t like the French pronunciation of Citroen (two syllables, nasal n) and moved to Citroën (three syllables, ordinary n).

The rest is history.

I want a Cactus so bad. I hope they bring them here soon. I will push hard to buy one if they bring them here.

That’s actually the standard C3. Mid and high range variants of the new one have the airbumps too now.

The three French carmakers paint a fairly diverse picture of French society (at least for a century ago) :

- Louis Renault was Parisian and a Catholic

- The Peugeot brothers were Protestant and provincial

- André Citroën was Jewish and an immigrant
