Kinja'd!!!

Now to look for a bike. I’ve decided to stay with slow learner legal stuff and get some experience before attempting my licence. So 125cc it is. My budget is low (I can afford more but it doesn’t make sense to pay a lot at this stage) so it’s between a new chinese thing like the Lexmoto above, or a lightly used yamaha or honda. The chinese stuff has warranty that’ll last my ownership so I’m not too worried about stuff breaking on it. I’ll only be commuting and going on weekend nice weather rides so nothing too fancy is needed.

I’d rather go with a used Yamaha or Honda. It’s not like there’s going to be much expensive stuff to break on a 125 anyway. Plus, the up-front cost is lower and you’ll take practically no hit at resale.

The new Lexmoto is £1300 which doesn’t get you a nice Honda here unfortunately. For the condition I’d want an equivalent Honda would be £1800 at least. I’m financing (need to get my credit up for a mortgage soon) so the cost isn’t a huge issue but still.

Used Grom? I’ve ridden one and it was a ball o’fun. Despite my 330lbs. :P

I’d go with a used Honda or Yamaha. When you’re ready to sell your learner bike, you can sell it for practically the same amount you paid, whereas used Chinese bikes I worth roughly a case of toilet paper.

NBC110 is a current model.

I wish the US had more 125cc bikes. So exciting to be hunting for a new bike good luck.

Congrats, life is about to get immensely better for you. Riding is fun, therapeutic and a shit ton of other good things. It will also make your commute something you don’t dread.

You won’t have it very long so whatever suits your budget. I’d look into the reliability of the Lexmoto and see how it rates for it’s brakes. If the other options offer a significant advantage in braking then step go with them. The one upside to something used is you will probably get what you paid for it in a year when you upgrade.

I’m going to put a year as an over, I think you’ll yearn for something new in 6 months!

I can’t imagine riding a 125 on the streets here in Ontario (Canada). Simply not enough power and drivers are so clueless I’d wager it’s more dangerous than a higher powered bike. Maybe if you stick to just zipping around within city limits... But things are a bit different overseas.

Ah in that case it’s not available here. When I saw it wasn’t in Honda’s lineup I assumed it was an older bike.

I’m not allowed on motorways until I get my full licence so it’s fine for my use. People who do distance would usually get a bigger bike.

The thing is the chinese bike is dirt cheap and they seem to sell for more than half they cost new regardless of condition. It lines up pretty well with the other bikes in depreciation.

They’re extremely hard to find here.

That’s surprising. We don’t have any Chinese bikes in the US, but we have tons of Chinese scooters. Used ones are practically free, like $200-600.

I see -licensing is quite different here. Enjoy whatever bike you get!

I’d say that your decision should factor in how well you think the bike will survive a low speed fall, and how easy/cheap will replacement parts be - not just plastics, but fork tubes, possibly wheels. Some parts on a bike can get tweaked easier than you might think. A simple drop because of the kickstand going back can break a decent amount of plastic, and perhaps even break levers (depending on what it hits). A slow crash could end with the bike sliding into a curb. So which bike will you care least about as far as looks, could be a good thing to think about.

Don’t take unnecessary pointless risks, especially for a first bike. Stick with a medium to high production bike from a proven Japanese manufacturer.

Typically one that cost £1500 ish new will be worth £800 or £900 after a couple years and 10k miles from what I’ve seen.

Yeah it’s a totally different experience to driving and pretty exciting. When I first got on I thought I was going pretty fast, looked down and it was 30mph and I was holding up traffic XD

There are a couple reviews out there for te Lexmoto and they’re all pretty positive. However I went to the Honda dealer and had a look at a CB125F and it’s a very nice bike for a little 125, so I’m tempted by that right now.

The Honda probably wins there, parts are everywhere and easy to get hold of.

That’s surprising to me. A Chinese scooter with over 5k miles on it is worthaybe $300, if it still runs.

Geared bikes tend to be worth a little more and the used values for anything two wheeled are very robust here, unlike our car market.
