those trucks are impressive all on thier own, for other reasons. i have gotten to see a couple of those diesels, up close, with big monster sized turbos, that would just flat-out run. that thing right there is set up, almost like a modern equivalent of a gasser. thing is, that the dodge has the advantage of 4wd to help it get off the line.

I assure you that I have had numerous opportunities to go looking for my back once I’ve thrown it out.

Your Beetle will be all-wheel-drive, won’t it?

I’m enough of a tree hugger to be bothered by bro trucks that roll coal. (He says as he plans upgrades to the ‘71 van he bought specifically to be old enough to avoid smog tests...)

Kinja'd!!! "Die-Trying" (die-trying)
06/02/2017 at 22:33, STARS: 0

no, the beetle is on an s10 front suspension. its almost a mid engine car. it has about 13 inches of engine set back, from where s10 guys put their engines.

its the model T that i am aiming for all wheel drive. its the one that is going to be the BIG challenge.

depending on the truck i dont mind the coal roll thing. its one thing to turn up the fuel, to make a whole lot of soot to be an obnoxious jerk, but if you have it turned up to support a lot of boost, and the power that creates, i am fine with that. but i am just not a big fan of going around blowing soot because you can. watching one of those big heavy trucks outrun a brand new mustang or camaro sure is sweet though. its kind of like my truck. its LOUD, but i try to not just rev the crap out of it to be obnoxious to the guy next to me, and i try to not set there reving at people in crosswalks. a bit of trying to do the right thing, being considerate.

those trucks are nice too, in that you have far fewer people cut you off in traffic, and people dont tailgate near as close.

honest money is the money that shows up on my w2. its the money that you make going to a legit job for 8-12 hours a day. as opposed to......... easy money where you flip stuff, cars, engines, parts. things that dont require much physical labor, but require a specific skill set(think tattoo artist/engine rebuilder). or dealing in OPM (other peoples money). then there is dirty and dishonest money, where people buy and sell contraband “stuffs” whether its moving stolen property along, or converting drugs.

i prefer the honest money, i know it will be there, as long as i keep showing up to work......

Well. I bought a T5 transmission today. It’s an older one, non-WC, but having the mechanical speedo tail housing. The seller is a 78-year-old guy who deals only in engines and transmissions and he knows all about mating that transmission with my old inline-six. So other than the clutch disc and the number of splines, the only thing I might need to do is give the front of the input shaft a haircut, which is a thing.

I’ll be trying to start the engine here pretty soon, once I finish a couple of things on the daily driver fleet.

Kinja'd!!! "Die-Trying" (die-trying)
06/03/2017 at 20:50, STARS: 0

yeah, starting it up, will give you a very good idea of where you are starting at. i usually just fill up the float bowls(get a small cup, and fill up the carb bowls through the vent tube), and try to light it off. i let it run for however long it will stay running off of what i had just put in the carb. i disconnect the fuel pump to fuel tank line so it doesnt have a chance to suck up any rust or trash. after i have started it up a couple of times like that, i connect a line from the fuel pump to a gas can. thats when i usually make sure that i have some kind of coolant in the system, and run it for however long it will stay lit on the can, or until it starts to get hot.

its a nice feeling, when the parts pile gets big enough that you can see the project almost building itself.........

06/03/2017 at 22:00, STARS: 1

Building itself... But that’s exactly what’s happening.

I figured I’d place a couple of fuel filters on the pressure side of the fuel pump and start out with it being fed from a gallon of gasoline in a fuel can. And a CO2 fire extinguisher handy for when something surprising happens... I thought I’d make sure there was plenty of coolant already in place before I began. I’ll have to track down the vent hole to fill the bowls...

sorry,

its been a long time since i have gotten to play a good, legit round of 20 questions. its fun for all the wrong reasons. i try to play “i spy” with the folks at work, when they misplace something, but they get real fed up, REAL QUICK..... i have a hard time remembering all the rules, SO , if you want the hint, i’ll try and make it at least decent, itll be the 2 question penalty......

i look at things in a bit of a strange way. maybe, that it is some of the experiences that i have had at my other fields of endeavors. like when i was a tattoo guy, and i dont have any tattoos myself, and people just near flat refuse that i can do the work that i tell them that i can do, because i dont have any of the “fluff” that goes along with it. i have to tell folks “either you believe that i can do this thing, or you dont, doesnt hurt my feelings.” its also been strange, to see people’s reactions, when they find out how i earn my “honest” money. its almost as if my answers to thier later questions about things(cars and junk in general) doesnt carry any weight anymore. its as if my credibilty is somehow injured, as a result of my day job....... its an awkward feeling for sure.

i have worked a lot of entirely different jobs over the years, there wasnt much if any kind of real overlap between them.

my automotive pursuits..........NOTHING to do with my “real” job

supplier, product rep, no..... 12......... but what i produce, is the rep. that the public sees.........

although i do show the new guys the correct way to do thier job, and the SOPs, that is not the job that i am there for. 11..........

tattooing is fun. it is also dead easy. if you have a steady hand, and can follow a line there is nothing to it. one of the downsides is that lots of folks want to beat you up on price(they dont want to pay much for work). EVERYONE tries to line up for tattoo work, but almost nobody has free cash to spend on it. and i feel bad taking peoples money when i know that they ought to be spending the money on important stuff, like rent. and you get to wade through the time wasters “draw me up a (whatever) this big, so i can see what it will look like”..... yeah sure. and then the santas list folks.... “ i want a pony, and a car, and money, and my kids name, and my girls name, my sons name..”....... fun stuff. i kind of dropped myself off the map on that work, and its real nice to not be known for tattoo work right now.......

It’s not retail per se, but there are sales people whose dead weight you carry and whom you somehow prepare. Peoples’ health and well being are at stake if you or your firm don’t do their roles diligently. All shapes, sizes and ages come through, but it’s not medical. It can’t be grocery because that would be retail. And the salespeople are dumb. There is a tangible product or products or supplies. You weld together iron armatures upon which are mounted items for offer (the sales people). Since you weld them out of scrap steel, they are worthless and you have to carry them to where they will be set up. If you make a bad weld, a part of the display will fall off and injure a passerby, who could be old or young or skinny or fat or male or female. Since you are employed by a contractor who is hired by a retail store, you are not technically retail. But that’s wrong, because nobody who knew that you welded stuff for a living would think that assembling go-fast project cars was such a stretch, so I don’t know.

Perhaps you are a custodian who incinerates what he gathers during the course of the day, maybe even some kind of infectious waste.

I’ve been ready for 17 tries. If you want to give me more hints, I’ll keep playing, but the pressure of running out of guesses was getting old.

game is done. you were more than a good sport. no need to keep dragging it out.

pressure is a good thing. it makes diamonds right?

any how, i am a cook. i work at an IHOP. sanitation is one of THE most important things. if we are not on top of it, a whole lot of people COULD get sick.

i work with lots of sales people, they are the waiters. if they mess up on a regular basis, they are dead weight that we are dragging around, having to make thier mistakes right. and from where i am standing while i work, i can see the public as they come in, and they are all shapes and sizes/ages.

its retail, in that we take a product, and then sell it in small quantities to the final, end consumer. but food service is not exactly retail.

quality is a top priority. we produce the REP.utation that people see.

like i said we all just TRY to look busy, and that we know what it is that we are doing.

and i own nothing. all i have to do is show up, and get to work. if there is a store that is missing some of its cooks for whatever reason, i might get a call at the store to go and help over in that location.

fire is one of the most important tools i have........ and there are tools, equipment, supplies, and inventory...........

SO there you have it..........

If I’d had 80 more guesses, I’d probably not have gotten there. But I’d rather work the grill at iHop than work for TSA.

When I was in the Army, one Easter, I got a friend of mine who was a cook let me work a day in the mess hall and all I wanted to do was the grill so I could greet the folks coming through and cook their eggs for them and their burgers at lunch. For the same reason, I enjoyed my role as a fuel handler because I enjoyed greeting the other soldiers when they came for fuel. And it’s why I enjoy teaching.

Does that make you a short-order cook?

yeah, its all pretty quick stuff. eggs, hash browns, sausage, bacon, omlettes, pancakes. nothing hard. then the lunch stuff.

like i said, honest money.

i try not to do work that i enjoy. or work at something that i do enjoy. that is one of the main reasons i dont like to work on cars for a living. at the end of the day i WANT to be under a hood working, and it STILL be fun. when i leave work, i want to be able to get away from it, and not think twice about it on my free time. great plan huh?

like i said, most folks have a hard time believing i know anything about anything when they think of me as a cook.....

as things are, my time at work is a vacation from home. and my work at home is a vacation from my honest work. works out great.......
