Kinja'd!!!

Maybe this time the clear coat won’t haze up. I fixed a rust spot about 2 years ago on it. The base coat went down like butter. The clear; not so much.....

Fast forward to this past February. The rust was starting in the same spot. Today we went down to metal, etch primed and filled.... I have to sand it in about 45 minutes then apply adhesion promoter. After that base coat and clear. Wish me luck....

Rarely does clear ever go on smooth. Depending on how rough it is I go down to 1000 grit sandpaper when wetsanding after it dries.

Groundskeeper Willy : Yeah, I bought your mutt. And I ‘ate him!

[ raises a huge bone of meat ]

Bart Simpson : [ gasps ]

Groundskeeper Willy : [ tears meat off the bone ] I ‘ate his little face, I ‘ate his guts, and I ‘ate the way he’s always barkin’!

[ tosses a bone behind him ]

Groundskeeper Willy : So, I gave him to the church.

Bart Simpson : [ relieved ] Ohh, I see. You *hate* him, so you gave him to the church.

Groundskeeper Willy : Aye. I also ‘ate the mess he left on me rug!

[ Bart turns around, stares at Willy ]

Groundskeeper Willy : Ya heard me!

Oh the issue wasn’t smoothness. It was haze.

put base on smooth, medium wet as it were. Clear will follow form. If the base is dry and rough, so too will the clear be. Apply clear as you want it to look, 1/2 overlap on each pass. Practice on a garbage can or something for a few coats to perfect your muscle memory and see how the product reacts to how you spray until you find that perfect balance. If your primer is sanded I see no gain from an adhesion promoter in this instance.

Are you using a hardened clear coat?

I will be this time. I think it was just too humid last time.

I’m in a holding pattern now. Got everything nice and smooth and the rain came right before I was gonna lay the base coat... Supposed to pass. I’ll check the humidity an hour after and see what happens....

Ready for the last coat of base. I’ve ben putting it on light so as not to have any runs. It’s a dry look right now yet smooth, so ill have to go heavier. Here’s to not getting any runs or fish eyes....
