I like photography... but it’s even more expensive than car parts.

What’s that one worth?

Oooo, fancy! That’s awesome. Nikon needs more f/1.4 lenses in their lineup.

I find the physics of lenses very interesting. There is a formula for the reason that front element is so large and its directly proportional to the focal length and apature (plus image circle and flange depth). i.e. if you want a fast long lens you HAVE to have a big front element. Its also why you see big zooms that have internal ND filters, because putting one on the front element becomes really difficult to do on account of how large they get. Sports video camera lenses are my favorite. Even though they have relatively small image circles their front elements are HUGE

Yes, I have the 50mm 1.4 AF-D and enjoy it greatly.

“Short and thick does the trick.” That’s an old expression referring to how to get good bokeh.

The formula is actually extremely simple- the f number is the ratio of focal length to pupil size. So that 105mm f1.4 has a maximum pupil 75mm...which is absolutely enormous.

So the 600mm f/4 has an aperture that can open to a massively insane 150mm, which is why that lens is freaking massive and costs more than 10k.

Kinja'd!!!

Bigger pupil means bigger, cleaner glass, means more money.
