My beef is this: So I want to trace those tracks out on Inkscape, so I can turn the blocky MS Paint line drawings you see above into a silky-smooth .svg illustration that’s more or less equal to the ones seen on Wikipedia.

See, I want to (1) find out precisely how long is every segment is when I draw and whether or not 1px=1-meter, and (2) just how the heck am I supposed to draw over the lines with my hamfisted-ass mousework. It’s what put off my go at upgrading my track drawings. I could use some help.

AutoCAD would work great for this. You’d draw over the track lines with a pline or spline, adjust until they fit, and then scale until the total length number was right.

There is a tool under Path called “Trace Bitmap”.

It will look at a picture and trace outlines or colors or whatever and change it into splines you can manipulate. I use it to convert pictures or PDFs into .dwg I can use in CAD for customer artwrok.

It can be a pain to get it to output exactly what you want, but crisp black lines on white background with no grayscale is about as good as you can ask for to convert. Good Luck!

Trace it, then adjust scale properly.

Not familiar with Inkscape in particular but it doesn’t have a ‘line’ tool to draw straight lines?
