As I mentioned earlier , I’ve got Dazed and Confused running as I’m working today. Just got to the scene where Wooderson (Matthew McConaughey) is extolling the virtues of his 1970 Chevelle SS 454 “Melba Toast”.

He lists of the following engine features/mods:

[Holley] 750 Double Pumper

Edelbrock intake

Bored over .030

11:1 pop-up pistons

He claims 390 horsepower (SAE Gross at the crank on leaded gas, I’m assuming, given the time period).

What do you think?

Absolutely. That engine made 390 hp from the factory in the Corvette. Bump the compression up another .75 and add a “better” carb and intake and it probably makes up for the shitty Chevelle exhaust manifolds.

Alright, so what do you think it made with those mods?

Sounds about right. LS6 454s were claimed by Chevy to make 450HP, so that’s probably an LS5. Factory claims for the LS5 was 360 HP, so maybe 390 is with the overbore and whatever else he’s done...or maybe that’s what it actually dynoed at.

Still...I like Clint’s Firebird better.

I’d say around 400. Needs headers badly.

Priorities, man. You can afford headers or Aerosmith tickets but not both.
