A true “convertible”

The Nissan Pulsar NX. this was such a cool idea. A car that could be a sporty little liftback, or a more spacious hatchback, or remove the hardtop completely and T-tops and you’ve got a convertible with a tiny truck bed. What more could you want.

Of coarse an new car wouldn’t be as low and sleek as the Pulsar was but the versatility could still be there. I think the FRS would be a good match for it.

I have the same issue with this as I would a hardtop Wrangler. What do I do with the parts I’m not using? How convenient is it if it requires 2 or more people to make the conversion?

That’s why it works so well on a small car, the parts are smaller, and also lighter... although that’s still a ton of glass

My mom owned a 1986 or 87 Pulsar NX SE and I drove it a lot. She bought it because of the looks and T-TOPS!!! I think she took the T-Tops off twice in the 6 years she owned the car. As a teenager, I had them off every chance I got. We never took the rear hatch off.

The car was a fantastic concept, but Nissan’s execution was painfully bad.

The 16 valve DOHC engine would rev FOREVER and buzzed like a nest of bees the whole time. All the power seemed to be 3500 rpm and up. Made for a miserable commuting car as if you actually wanted to get the car moving, you had to keep it above 3000 rpm.

The manual transmission had amazingly long throws. It seriously felt like the throw was a foot or more long. It was notchy as hell and difficult to shift quickly. The clutch was very lite and had very little feel.

I did manage to get the car up to 115 MPH on I-40 (hey, teenage boys are STUPID!!). The car was all over the place and very difficult to keep in the lane. Quite scary and I backed down very quickly. Never did this again...in this car (remember, teenage boy = STUPID).

While much slower and less cool looking, my 1978 Honda Accord was a more satisfying car to drive (according to my mom). She would often let me have her car so that she could use my car for the day.

After 2 years of outdoor parking (in the South), the red paint was chalking and fading. Nissan told us to pound sand when we talked to a regional manager about the paint job issues.

By year 5 the car was smoking and basically falling apart (I might have had a bit to do with one or two of the issues). The car had turned from bright red to chalky orange due to the bad paint job by Nissan. Things only got worse from there. By 1995, the car pretty much just sat in the driveway, looking pitiful. Eventually, the car was towed away and was never seen again.

That’s too bad. And probably why a decent on with both tops can’t be found at a reasonable price.

That looks awesome. I’ve never heard of it.

Actually I think it was on Top Gear and I remember the top being a PITA to remove. It came of in like 12 parts right?

I’ll be damned. I never knew that the hatch on the NX was removable.

Yup, there was a red one I’d see all the time when I was a kid. Sometimes it was the hatch, but usually it was the squreback. I thought the guy had two nearly identical cars.

it is ok if you just want to drop the top, in this case you just slide the canvas top back to the back of the car. If you want to make it a spider, it’s a bit more complicated, since you have to remove the arches on both sides of the car. and there is no way you can transport them, so you have to be sure you’re not gonna need them. Also: it was advertised as being able to transform into a pickup, but doing so by folding the tailgate down (as in the picture above) does hide the plate, so you’re not allowed to drive it like that.

I always liked the EXA in the top picture; I think that with a CA18DET could be a lot of fun.

Tuned one of those with squareback for a friend in the 90s. First time I knew they had dual plugs for each cylinder. I had only brought 4 plugs with me and had to hunt down more matching NGK plugs. He and his wife used to take the back off when getting mulch for yard and would fill the rear with as many bags as possible.
