Kinja'd!!!

I love my kids dearly, I really do. But going to see these amazing boats competing in the America’s Cup in Bermuda with my wife is something I’ve been planning and looking forward to since I saw the AC70s in the 2013 Cup on youtube. 70 foot catamarans on hydrofoils going 50mph...

If you haven’t seen what these boats are all about, or what they’re capable of, somewhere between a sailboat and a glider, really... you should check them out. Sailing 3x the speed of the wind, and exceeding the speed of wind on upwind legs. Spending 95 % of a race with the hulls completely out of the water. Just incredible.

Plus, you know, a week in Bermuda with my wife can’t be bad either.

These things are crazy. My wife and I just happened to be in San Francisco the week before the 2013 event so there were posters/signs everywhere for it and we got to see some of the boats being worked on out of water. I watched the race the next week and have been hooked since.

Was it you who has posted about these boats recently? Because I started watching after reading about them on Oppo. My first memories of the America’s Cup are from the 80s, when they were still sailing proper yachts and Australia got everybody’s pants in a bunch with their revolutionary keel. But these things are just sick. Any time I start watching anew sport I try to learn as much as possible about it. Watching boats race is mildly interesting, but learning how they work and how sailing works makes it all that much more interesting. I’ve got a long way to go, but this is a great crossover to my love of aviation because it’s all insane fluid dynamics in action. Plus, “foiling catamaran” just sounds cool.

Cool background article I read yesterday. http://www.popularmechanics.com/adventure/sports/a26280/americas-cup-yachts-oracle-team-usa/ I never knew what these things were capable of!

SCIENCE!!1! I mean, seriously, this is like something you might have read about in a science fiction book in the 50s, except they would have been flying over the surface of a molten lake on Venus.

Yeah I’ve been able to find very little coverage without cable. I’m hoping the finals will be available like last time, on youtube. We’ll be home by then...

It wasn’t me but yeah, this is like borderline sci-fi technology applied to an ancient sport. Cool stuff

I would LOVE to take a ride on one of these! I learned to sail on a Hobie 16 and have longed to get one of my own ever since. Some crazy guys are selling kits to turn small cats into hydrofoils. They even have them for Lasers! Holy crap, I’m about to lose another day to the internet....
