Kinja'd!!!

I was going to post an update anyways on the XF last night, the topic simply took a more “uplifting” approach. Hey, as the old adage goes, “A Jag that doesnt drip is probably out of fluids.” Whelp, it seems it decided to stop holding coolant so awaaaaay we go!

I’ll tell you all about it once everything is done. The XF is still under warranty until 2019/100,000 miles and currently sitting just shy of 30,000 miles on the odometer (thankfully miles are not on the clock, which is a rampant issue I hear). Kind of hoping for something randomly crazy as long as it’s covered because what’s the point of buying a warranty if you aren’t going to make your money back?!

Here are some quick pictures I took before the XF barfed like an ASU freshman (I just picked a random college for the emotional reaction). Now I understand why British cars are often so attractively designed, if you gotta be towed then at least look good on that pedestal. Cuts a nice figure at Shaq’s eye level. Kinda makes me want an Aston Martin now...

Oh, so ended up with the day off. I ate, took a shit, and went to bed. A perfect day that can only be brought to you by British borkability! Ill give this a 7 out of 10, elbows a bit too pointy but would definitely buy again.

That’ll teach Jaguar to buy unreliable Ford engines.....

Well the powertrain is actually great on the 5.0 cars (though more performance oriented than the cars are). I think I may have that Nate Dogg issue of having hose in different area codes.

it’s comforting to know that years and years later they’re still doing the same thing. Keep being you Jaguar, you beautiful unreliable piece of work

The most worried I’ve ever been in my life was taking my XJ12 out of storage before I bought it from my grandfather. His XJS was there too and had a nice, healthy sized puddle underneath it. The XJ12 was dry as a bone underneath (after seven years!) so I assumed it was simply stored with no fluids in it. Nope, thing didn’t leak a drop in seven years. Supernatural shit.

You know what, I’ve lived with the XE three times and a slightly newer version (but not the new generation) XF all within the last year and a half of buying this car. It’s been nice getting a complimentary new car every few months when the bottom of the lot is $40,000. Seriously, I feel like I know everything but the XJ (the one I have always wanted to own) very well. It’s been just the way I imagined!

Actually, the 5.0 V8 is a new Jaguar-developed engine with Denso electrics.

The other engines they use are ridiculously-reliable Ford Duratecs and the engine found in my Focus ST...

The problem cars always have Jaguar-developed engines. They can’t seem to build a V8 that isn’t going to puke something out. I love the adage because it’s true.

Didn’t you have a Hyundai and a Jeep Grand Cherokee?...

I’ll take your word for it, I live in a place where no Jag has spark plugs (up to now they’ve all had the Ford 2.7/3.0 diesel V6. The 2.7 is no paragon of reliability)

I have a Kia Amanti and a Jeep Grand Cherokee in addition to this XF. I have a condition. By the time I retire I want seven cars. Im learning to slowly take care of more and more vehicles at once so its like being a pokemon trainer but with cars.

As a casual XJ shopper, any idea how the 5.0L and 3.0SC of modern Jags are supposed to hold up?

We don’t get the diesels (nor do we get the 2.0T, which seems tiny for a car that big), but the AJ-V6 (as they brand it; it’s a slightly upgraded Duratec V6, which is used in an un-upgraded form in the Mondeo) is so reliable that I often see otherwise unreliable Jags with 200000+ miles (~322000km) on the odometer when they have that engine.

Last February. In hindsight I passed up getting a 200,000-plus mile Acura NSX. I was actually working on a post updating on my current garage and future plans so that should pop up next week or sooner...or later. Im pretty whatever on typing since I do everything off my tiny phone, no desktop or laptop.

Let me make a separate post for that since it’s a bit complicated (as you would expect). In a nutshell its everything around the powertrains and design that are the issue since modern Jaguar gives you more engine than car as their value and that means the plastics, rubbers, and electronics tend not to be quite up to the amount of performance they’ll let you get out of the powertrain. Ill write my take.

Well here’s the post about passing on the NSX: http://oppositelock.kinja.com/no-nsx-for-me-1747900403

Here’s the one when I bought the XF for my mom (and myself to be honest): http://oppositelock.kinja.com/bought-a-thing-1760337619 .

I think I post about each car every 4 to 6 weeks in general.

I just got the S-Type R back from the Shop because it didn’t want to hold coolant anymore.

$2,400 and 12 new hoses later...

Ugh! I’ll let you know if I can match that. Good to know Jaguar never stops being Jaguar.
