The worst month I’ve had in the 2.5 years I’ve been selling cars. Hopefully this month I’ll bounce back. Lord knows the bills will need June to be a big month.

If you don’t mind me asking, how many do you usually average? And how does commission on car work? When you sell a car a few thousand under MSRP does it affect your bottom line that much?

Beat me to asking this..was curious to know what your monthly average is for you and your dealership. Also, commission % and salary if applicable

I usually sell 12-14. So this month was a little less than half my usual. And it wasn’t for lack of trying. I really had some bad luck with my customers. Commission is a percentage based system based on how much profit you make on your sales, plus or minus a few factors like how many units total did you sell for the month and what your CSI score is. And since it’s profit percentage based, giving discounts can swing your commission big time unless you can qualify the customer for a program where manufacturer covers part of the discount.

No salary. 15-25% of profit depending on number of units. Bonus of 750-2k depending on how many units you sell and your CSI score MTD and YTD. There’s always the potential to make money but it also leaves you no safety net during months like these.

Dam I know that all too well..I was 20% commission, no salary, with a $300 flat (200 depending on car).

Best of luck next month my friend

Ever think about driving for Uber or Lyft in order to give yourself a safety net. Allows you to make money after hours and you can easily pull in a several hundredbucks after a few short nights of hustle.

My commute is already tracking me over my miles for my lease. Plus once you add my commuting time in, I’m way over 60 hours a week already. If I had a 9-6 that was local to me I’d be all in. But right now it’s not a viable option.

Wow. It seems a bit complicated. Is this a similar system to other dealerships for other makes and models? How much commission do you lose if you sell a car at “invoice”?

Those seem like brutal conditions. While I don’t sell cars, I may or may not have a commission-based pay system with a base salary. And while the base is comparatively low, it is always good to know that I’ll be able to afford the mortgage (and maybe two grocery trips) if I ever hit a bad month.

thats rough, a girl i used to work with at best buy now sells cars out of a GMC Buick dealer but i dont think shes ever hurting. but then again shes a fan of tight skirts and low cut tops so that may have something to do with it

It’s pretty similar across the board. and you never lose money on a sale, you just make minimum commission, which for us is 250.

Every dealership that has a base salary, it’s usually super low, and the amount per car is so low you don’t make much over it.

Women are generally considered to be more trustworthy by the public so they traditionally do much better in sales. These big strong men think some cute little girl could never rip them off

Car salesmen already put in 50-60 hrs a week. The few hours they have each week are usually eaten up with household responsibilities.

I know. I work two jobs at 50-60 hours a week and have been ubering at night over the last few weeks to see if I can make any money doing it when I go back to school. I don’t have that hellish commute eating up time though. I just switch on the app as soon as I finish my second job and I’m gtg.
