It’s an absolute giggle to buzz around in traffic in.
I’m driving my brother’s down to school to save on wear and tear (downtown STL has *the worst* streets) and gas in the Silverado while he’s on summer break.
Its obviously not a sports car, but it’s so easy to dart in and out of traffic in. The steering has a surprising amount of feedback and the front end feels incredibly light, I’m assuming that’s thanks to having the light little aluminum EcoTec 2200 over the iron lump that is the 3400 V6.
The EcoTec isn’t a power house but it revs decently and is jumpy off the line, perfect for when there’s a city bus stopped in your lane up ahead and you’re the first one in line at a stop light. Plus it apparently runs on air because I swear it doesn’t use any gas.
The suspension is also softer than most Cadillacs so not only does it soak up bumps like a much bigger car, but body motions are hilariously over exaggerated. When you take off from a stop the back end squats down and it rolls through the oddly sharp turns for a 40mph road, making commuting oddly more enjoyable.
I do wish it had a way to hook my phone up. I hate morning radio talk shows so much.

To be fair, from a build quality stand point, it totally is. The clear coat is suddenly flaking off the spoiler for no reason and of you so much as breathe hot air on the dash it curls up more.

Its definitely the better looking of the pair. I don’t hate the Grand Am’s exterior after it lost the plastic cladding but the interior is just a bunch of amorphous blobs.

It sounds like the suspension is shot. Older Cars get like this, but it seems to be ignored the most by GM owners (probably because they suffer so many other minor annoyances that it just blends into the background).
Also, I agree with you, hydraulic power steering is delicious. I know why they moved away from it, but it really has great feel.

The previous owner redid the whole suspension not to long before my parents bought it for my brother. It’s just that squishy.

When I took my road test to get my license nearly a decade ago, the Alero I borrowed was a dilapidated piece of shit. I can’t imagine any Alero or Grand Am is in any better shape now.
It was still better than trying to pass the test in my parents’ Econoline.

I had a 2001 with the 2.4 Twin Cam. I loved it! Good car? For what I needed, yes; in actuality, no. In hindsight I’d still have it as a beater if I could.

My mom and then sister had a 2002 (I think?) sport edition. v6 with gray grey gray cloth interior. Cheap as shit typical 90s-designed GM car. But i still enjoyed driving it, not bad until it completely fell apart 3-4 years ago (literally, like the dash falling off and stuff)

I’m pretty sure this is the only nice grand am left in existence. The previous owners followed the maintenance schedule in the owners manual to a T and kept record of literally everything they ever did to it in a little book, even when they put a damn air freshener in it. Why someone babied it so much I’ll never know.

When I was an intern at GM I spent a lot of time in one of these traveling to different sites over a 3 month period. I have no lasting memory of this vehicle except for how it smelled.
Around the same time, I was dating a girl that had a fully loaded Olds Alero. V6, leather, the works. That car was great. Her brother had a base model with a 5 speed an I really enjoyed that car as well.
