I have been getting some shit lately about my username. I have been accused (not on Oppo) of having a racist username. It is tiresome.
Its origin is a shitty hardcore band my friends and I had in the 90s. Our guitarist was black, and our drummer was Korean. We behaved badly together and wrote appalling songs. Our highlight was playing the teen center in Randolph, VT.
The name came from their constant joking about the whiteness of hardcore, and how our racial makeup didn’t work. I commented that we were the immoral minority, a reaction to the Moral Majority, something most of you are not old enough to remember. We thought it was funny, so we used it. When I started my kinja account, I used it for fun. But a small number of people seem to react negatively.
Should I change it?

As a visible minority, I don’t see anything at all wrong with it. “Minority” just means a smaller number of a part anyways, so I don’t see why it would have to be racial.

If you were to give in to them, it would only generate more people like them in the future because of positive reinforcement; if someone is offended by something you do that isn’t even offensive unless contorted into a new context, you tell that person to shut the hell up and find a real problem to bitch about, like how learning is easier than ever and people just keep getting more and more stupid. Nope, don’t change it at all. You know the name isn’t racist and can explain how it came to be. You’ve never acted outwardly racist on Oppo whatsoever, so why should you change who you are because people misinterpreted it?
