Please don’t leave me in the car. I will get bored, frustrated, antagonized by passersby, and I just might find some of your interior bits quite tasty. Nevermind the temperature or lack of airflow.

Never in my 15+ year career have I had so many “My Dog Ate The____ In My Interior” conversations as I’ve had in the past 30 days. Armrests, seatbelts, DASHBOARDS.

I learned long ago, when the wife called to ask me how much a parking brake handle would be for her Focus because she left little Brodie in the car “for just a few minutes” and he gnawed the heck out of it. We never left him, or any other dog we had alone in the car again.

People, stop leaving your pets in the car. If you HAVE to take them with you to a place that does not allow animals, tie them up outside. Or leave them with a family member or friend. Or putt them in a suitable carrier or crate in the car with adequate ventilation.

Unless you like causing hundreds or thousands of dollars damage to your car. Or in today’s case, Grand Cherokee.

I don’t see how people can leave their dog in a hot car I feel bad when standing outside pumping gas and my dog is in the car.

I forgot about placing them in a crate. I mean, some people just ‘know’ thier dogs, and trust them not to go on a rampage. But lets be honest, a lot of dog owners are dumb and clueless, and will blame the DOG for chewing up the interior and not themselves for putting it in that situation.

I had to travel with my cats 12 hours via car last year, alone. I was terrified running into rest stops for 3 minutes, and spent 5 minutes with the AC on ice beforehand so the car was as cold as possible. I was too paranoid to take the fob and lock the doors and leave it running. Didn’t want to draw more attention than necessary.

My dog has never once torn up a single item of mine. He has torn all his toys and even his beds to shreds before, but never a single piece of furniture/etc. I would be so frustrated if I had that problem. In exchange though, he does jump all over my car barking at dogs we pass.

My two favorite parts stories on this topic are a guy who came in to buy a $30 part that he was pissed was “too much”. In the 10 minutes he was at our parts department his Labrador destroyed $1200 in interior trim and seat belts in his Trailblazer. That was 10 yrs ago. In the past year I had a customer with a Hummer H2 who left his dog in the back and it chewed its way through over $3k in trim. Only $900 of that wasn’t discontinued from GM. Like I always say “Karma is a bitch”.

My dog seems unsure if the dogs shes sees out the window of the car actually exist or not. She just gets really focused, doesn’t move or bark. Sometimes when we go to the park she’ll do that too, just stares at the dogs playing and I’m like come on get out of the car.
