Kinja'd!!!

Not sure why I’ve never noticed this before but i do now and it bothers me; artificial gravity is electrically driven. i.e. there are “artificial gravity” machines in ships. Why do people keep on walking around when some space creature or invisible fence knocks out all the power? Including emergency power?

Laziness that’s why.

It actually happens in the JJ Abrams films which is a neat thing. Latest one I think there’s a boarding action scene with intermittent gravity.

Depends on the fiction - plenty of pieces of fiction have had either artificial gravity loss with power loss (going back to Doc Smith’s Lensman , I think) or have had artificial gravity assumed with some kind of permanent effect. Star Trek has been hit and miss on this - for example, in one of the Star Trek films, a Klingon ship suffers loss of artificial gravity, but I think that’s the only time it shows up. It may be implied somewhere that the artificial gravity used by the Federation is based on some stable principle not involving continued power or much power, but I don’t know. “Superconductors” + “A wizard did it” + “quantum something” or something like that. Or maybe it requires little enough power that there are backups of backups.

Farscape had a couple of “all power gone = no gravity” things happen, I think.

I was re watching Enterprise last night* and they mention an artificial gravity generator and even point out that there is a spot on the ship is ineffective... Then not 10 minutes later they’re fully out of power making not that backups aren’t working either and just happily walking around.

*Don’t judge me

Because the generators are tied into life support? Maybe??

I have the TNG Technical Manual at home so I could give you a more definitive answer then...

Seperate closed loop not tied into the rest of the power grid? Iunno. The ships are definitely not designed to be navigated in zero g, so there must be a failsafe to keep gravity going.

I think this is just a case of that gravity wasn’t really considered or fleshed out in TOS. They didn’t have the budget to address the matter of gravity so it was just assumed that the ships always had a constant up & down. Now they’re stuck sticking to the same concept.

The Expanse has a much more pragmatic approach to shipboard gravity. Have you watched it yet?

Silly, everyone knows that the communications emitter arrays built into the walls can be modified to emits bursts of Percheron particles that will change the gravitometric balance in the space time continuum and haul everyone in proximity to the floor. The key is to not emit too many Percherons and crush a passerby.

It’s good. I’d recommend the books as they’re a bit better paced than the show.

The way gravity works in The Expanse universe is that artificial gravity doesn’t exist. Ships are oriented vertically (think a many-floored building with downward pointing engines in the basement) and gravity comes from thrust.

This might be a dumb question, but what happens when they need to stop? Or change course? It doesn’t seem like the thrust would be constant.

Ships flip and burn thrusters to decelerate. The deceleration presses you into the deck, so you’re only in 0 g when flipping or keeping constant speed. Course corrections are kept at a gentle enough G to not impact anyone on the ship, although in combat maneuvering beyond the body’s limits is a real danger. Crew members strap into gimballed chairs so they’re not thrown around.

If anything this is the most realistic approach to gravity and is likely what humanity will do if we ever move out into space.

Or, better yet, why do they add gravity to parts of the ship that clearly present a falling hazard? Like that whole fight scene inside the Narada.

From me being a Trekkie and knowing most things about Star Trek, artificial gravity is tied into environmental systems. In the event of an attack or something that knocks out main power, automatic sub systems kick in to keep air breathable and feet on deck plates.

From what I’ve seen the backups are independent of everything else. So even with no power they are still running. Other times its just bad writing and oversight. Voyager had a lot of these episodes.

If you want to think in terms of in the show, I would think that speaks to how less advanced of a ship the Original Enterprise was. They didn’t even have shields, they had armor for the ship. What that being said I would think something like the backups being out would be easy to do by an enemy. You would think with think saying that in the show they would show gravity being out, but nope. Goes back to my point of bad writing.

Well for the sake of fiction Hammerhead, there could be many options.

I don’t have any huge interest of star trek or star wars, but apparently the romulans use a quantum singularity to power their starships? I mean that sounds like something real unstable and dangerous so how did they get that **** to behave?? :P

The gravity and air is probably some critical system they’ve somehow been able to setup to be run with the fewest resources and kept up the longest even in emergency situations (there have been times where they have shown gravity loss)
