Since my 208 will leave next week, I need something to replace it.
The good thing is: I’m off work next week so I have plenty of time to go check out cars and find one that fits me.
The bad thing is: I’m pretty much an idiot when it comes to cars.

So in the last days I spent some time looking for a replacement car (who am I kidding? I always look for cars) and found some interesting bits.

I mainly focused on convertibles , because the last days have been so hot I was expecting a pair of hobbits coming into my flat to come and destroy a ring. I also realized the money I got (or will get) for my Pug gets you a lot of convertible if you are brave (or stupid) enough.

For example, there is this SL500 . 131.000 km, from 2002:

Kinja'd!!!

Pros: I love the exterior look of it.
Cons: I’m 30, not 62. It’s an auto. What could possibly go wrong with a 15 year old high end Benz?

Then there’s this E93 . 123.500 km from 2007 in a lovely shade of blue:

Kinja'd!!!

Pros: The E93 is one of the better looking 3 series in my opinion. I like the color, it is probably more reliable than the other 2
Cons: I’m not really into BMWs, so keeping it for an long time is not an option. I don’t know about the resale value.

And my favorite, a 1973 Porsche 911 , sans engine or transmission, that has been for sale for more than a year, and that has so much potential, in the form of a 13b and no bodywork (I love to piss people off):

Kinja'd!!!

Pros: probably gains value if I do the work correctly (so, no rotors and a new paint job)
Cons: I have too many projects and won’t be able to drive it this summer, or the next 3

Let’s all hope the weather cools down in the next days, or I might do something massively stupid.

As I accidentally already replied to Lumpy44:

The BMW has the same N53 engine as my car. It sounds glorious when you rev it, but at idle almost sounds like a diesel (direct injection).

It has a lot of firsts for a BMW engine. First alloy block with direct injection, and “Schichtladung” (I know you understand, so I won’t google for a translation). I am happy with mine, but since I bought it, I dug deeper into the matter and found out a few things. That’s how you do it, right? Buy first, research later!

Anyways, coils and injectors tend to be wear items on these engines, and they tend to consume a little oil. There are horror stories of cars never really running right out there in the forums, but I am careful with those. Nobody goes to a Bimmer forum to post “Hooray, 2 years in my car never missed a beat.” It’s usually when something goes wrong that they look for help in the forums. And the longer the thread gets, as they never really found a fix, the easier it is to find via google.

Hey, plenty of 58 year olds have R230s too.

Modern Mercedes roadster with a manual. This has been at my local dealer for a month now. Didn’t know they existed.

It’s like we are twins or something. Except your convertible choices are not, I assume, limited by where to put a wheelchair.

These seem to depreciate very slowly.

You could own a 20 year old chrysler sebring convertible and people are gonna assume retiree or midlife crisis. Its just something that a top down vehicle carries with it.

You may as well just forget their thoughts and enjoy your cruiser.

The 230 chassis is at the point where the bones are cheap but every little item on it will be 100-200 a pop to fix. The m113 motor has been pretty solid overall but if you want a manual youre looking at the squarer 129 sl or the smaller slk. Six cylinders max. Pro tip though, mercedes manuals are nothing to write home about. Part of why they dont really sell them in parts of the world.

I drive by one of those wheelchair mobility customization places daily and they have an rx8 sitting on the lot next to the vans. Not a convertible but my attention is almost to the point of lookin into it.

I drive one partly because the suicide doors make it the ideal sports car to put a chair in. It needs no more modification than hand controls. Great car, but you have to do extra due diligence on the engine to make sure it’s replaced with the improved apex seals.

You will never hear me say an SL is a bad investment. And to be honest, Im younger than you, I love rocking my drop top, it looks gorgeous and the looks on peoples faces is hilarious.

The 500 model is a great choice. Relatively simple and pretty easy to DIY for most jobs. I would easily consider that one first. The 911 project car is a close second, I like where youre going with that. The BMW though, with your opinions on the other cars, Im not sure is a contender. Not enough character for you. Find a more beat up one, maybe.
