Ignoring the inexplicable branding - were these good cars? Never rented one. Kinda like the looks and wonder if it would be a good DD or something to lightly modify. Have any of you driven one?

Not bad, I found them very difficult to get into/out of with that extra long door. Visibility is very poor.

Basically the tC is a Corolla 3-door hatchback that looks like a coupe, with a panoramic sunroof, the Camry’s 2.5 liter 179 hp motor, and an independent rear suspension instead of the Corolla’s twist beam.

Jalop had a list of best and worst cars a while back and it was on both.

but being the Camry 2.5 TRD made goodies for it, like a super charger and suspension upgrades. basically it’s a boring car that doesn’t totally suck and could be not boring, but since when it was new it was but mostly by elderly folks and not the youth targeted by the brand no one gives a fuck.

They’re not bad little cars. I think they get a bad rep because of the Scion branding encouraging people to buy them as mod-ready cars. The flat brim hat crowd tricks them out but the performance doesn’t live up to the image that’s projecting.

Like the rest of the scion crowd, it was aimed at one demographic but the polar opposite bought it. Similar to how the xB was aimed at college kids and young graduates but middle aged and elderly people bought them, the tC was aimed at the younger male with an eye for performance and style......but lots of women ended up buying them/owning them due to a combination of good looks (if nothing else, it is a breath of fresh air compared to the corolla/camry) and haggle-free pricing. Certainly the fact that it’s a solid toyota product gave it general appeal as well.

How does it drive? It’s happy to rev a bit, and will hustle around town well enough. It’s on the sporty side of inoffensive but it won’t worry any hot hatchbacks or sports cars. The trunk is very generous and it is a supremely practical 2 door compact. That’s probably its party piece - it is more stylish AND more practical than the corolla sedan. That trunk/hatch? Super easy to get bulky/oddly shaped things into and out of.

Tl;dr - not a celica, but a better, more stylish corolla.

A high school friend had one, and after driving it I almost bought the same when cash for clunkers was happening. Fun little car, and loved to be tossed around corners.

That’s about dead on. Plus it doesn’t have the aftermarket backing that the Civic Si has. With a Civic when you’re done with it being NA there’s plenty of turbo, or supercharger options out there for the K20, or you can swap in another Honda motor which you can also pretty ch just buy a kit and do it. The options are as broad for the Scion, so basically you do an intake, exhaust, and then sell it for something else. Then it ends up in the hands of some one who doesn’t Car as much.p, and beats on it,

My issue with them was 90% of Scion salesmen were a-holes and the cars ride like crap. If you Google “Scion TC rough ride” you’ll see a lot of complaints.

if you are ever behind one on the road, notice if the plastic covering the hatch handle area is missing, broken or taped on. This is a VERY common issue with these cars.
